The Morristown & Morris Township Library is seeking a friendly, customer service-oriented person to join our creative and dedicated staff as an Adult Services Librarian. The person in this position will aid our patrons through outreach efforts and public programming, readers’ advisory, reference and tech help.

Do you enjoy working with the latest technology?

Our Reference and Adult Services department is responsible for editing much of the Library’s website, posting to social media accounts and sending out regular emails to our patrons. The person in this position helps in following current trends in library technology and making recommendations on new technologies of value to the Library.

Do you like shopping? Do you enjoy working with a large and diverse collection of electronic and print collection material?

As one of the central hubs in our consortium, the Library has a large collection that includes general fiction & nonfiction, strong holdings of ESL materials, Spanish and Russian language collections. The person in this position will be responsible for ordering titles in print and digital formats to meet the diverse needs of our communities.

What is the Library looking for in a candidate?

In addition to having a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science and a background in the methods, practices and operations involved in a public library, the ideal candidate will be committed to exemplary customer service; have creative ideas and dedication to community outreach; robust collection development skills. Fluency in Spanish is highly desirable. We may hire a student, still in school, working toward their MLS/MLIS and within one year of graduation, if we feel they are the right candidate.

What are the perks for working at the Library?

This is a full-time position, 35 hours per week that includes some evenings and weekends. The salary is $59,000 commensurate with experience and/or skills listed in the previous paragraph. The position also includes pension (plus optional 403b), great vacation benefits, health and an optional dental plan. Added bonus: a great work environment with many friendly co-workers.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • A Master of Library Science or Information Science, and the ability to obtain a professional librarian’s certificate from the New Jersey Department of Education; a student enrolled in an accredited M.L.S. course of study who is on track for the above two qualifications will also be considered.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to providing the best quality customer service to our patrons.
  • Excellent technological skills and the ability to learn and teach new technologies to members of the public and other staff members.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as a team member of the general staff.
  • Ability to prioritize work tasks.
  • Knowledge of all types of Reference print & non-print resources as well as current and classic fiction and non-fiction literature.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists patrons with their information needs using the appropriate resources.
  • Purchases print and electronic materials in assigned areas.
  • Works on collection development projects in assigned print and non-print areas including purchasing and weeding using a variety of evaluation resources.
  • Teaches computer and technology skills to members of the public and staff in both classroom and individual settings.
  • Performs Readers Advisory activities as necessary.
  • Stays current with evolving library technologies and best practices; attends conferences, workshops and training seminars, as required.
  • Participates in MAIN consortium activities, as required.
  • Opens and closes the Library building according to Reference Department procedures and is responsible for the building; acts as the Library supervisor in absence of the Library Director or Assistant Director.

Specialized Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Has website responsibilities such as: updating and editing the library’s website, content and design evaluation and training others in how to update and edit the website.
  • Has Interlibrary Loan responsibilities which include coordinating borrowing and lending materials using JerseyCat and communicating with both patrons and staff members from other libraries regarding ILL requests.
  • Promotes and advertises Reference programming, events and services using both traditional local and up-to-date social media outlets; may write brief newsletter articles, blogging, television segments, producing brochures and flyers as well as other types of promotion as needed.
  • Manages and distributes Library eNewsletters.
  • Proctors exams for patrons.
  • Creates, maintains and updates promotional slides for large display screen monitors.
  • Has MAIN Committee responsibilities as assigned, including coordinating system-wide services and adapting system-wide services to our Library.
  • Conducts programming and providing content for events such as computer and technology training and other Reference information programming.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

All Library employees are expected to be courteous and helpful in their dealings with both fellow staff and the public. Promptness, neatness and regular attendance and the ability to be a self-starter are also important parts of this position. Employees must be able to lift, sort, and shelve library materials as required. Employees must be able to work some nights and weekends.
