The role of Associate Publisher/Publisher, based in Washington DC or Philadelphia, is perfect for someone passionate about scientific advancement and eager to work alongside top professionals in the field. As an Associate Publisher/Publisher (based on experience), you will manage a list of journals within the Springer Medicine team, focusing on United States-located medical societies and associations. You will drive portfolio growth through strategic journal development and acquisitions. Proactive, innovative, and data-driven, you will create and execute journal development strategies. As the primary publishing contact, you will collaborate with leading medical experts, opinion leaders, and society partners, requiring excellent communication and relationship-building skills. You will also gain exposure to all aspects of the academic journal publishing industry by working with colleagues across the business. This position can be located in our Washington DC or Philadelphia, PA offices in the US. Role Responsibilities: Support Medicine journals team in the acquisition of medical journals published on behalf of societies and associations located in the United States. Develop and sustain strong relationships with Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board members, society executives, and other stakeholders to enhance and uphold journals' reputations. Maintain regular contact with Editors and other external stakeholders as necessary by email, phone, and in-person when possible, ensuring that communications are responded to within a timely fashion and escalated when required. Organize and host Editorial Board meetings. Build knowledge of the field and relevant scientific communities to identify and act on growth opportunities, ensuring a competitive edge; this includes engaging with senior scientists to seek their advice and promoting Open Access initiatives. Prioritize journals for development or maintenance, in line with company strategy Build collaborative relationships within the immediate team and other departments. Monitor peer-review performance for the portfolio and assist colleagues in dealing with author queries or problem manuscripts. Provide timely support to authors and reviewers who contact a journal in your portfolio, ensuring responses within 2 working days. Escalate issues as necessary to maintain efficient communication. Plan and lead content commissioning by proactively suggesting topics based on data-driven insights and discussions with Editors. Support the management of the journals by being the primary contact for Editors and society stakeholders, and handle contract renewals. Be familiar with COPE Guidelines to be able to advise on ethical queries, and ensure all journals are compliant. Accurately file documents and enter data into relevant systems and databases to monitor agreement renewal dates, process payments to external partners and stakeholders, and keep all journal information (e.g., website and marketing materials) up to date. Represent the company at scientific conferences as needed to enhance market knowledge, network within the community, gather feedback on journals, and promote Springer Nature journals and strategy. Skills, Experience and Qualifications: Essential Degree level education or equivalent Previous experience in scientific publishing with a focus on journal publishing Interest and understanding of publishing business models (subscription, hybrid, open access) Highly customer-focused Strong administrative and organizational skills Excellent communication and influencing skills Strong critical appraisal and problem-solving skills Takes ownership to drive and complete tasks Proven ability to consistently meet deadlines Ability to adapt quickly to change Strong attention to detail and accuracy High level of computer literacy Desirable Previous experience acquiring and managing medical journals published on behalf of society or association partners Proven ability to lead projects Understanding of budgeting, financial planning, and revenue generation. Understanding of digital marketing, SEO, and social media strategies. Strong connections within the publishing industry. Ability to think creatively and propose new ideas. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
