The County of Volusia is seeking a Library Assistant for the Library Services Division. This position will be located at the Daytona Beach Regional Library.

Library Assistant

Responsible for para-professional work such as maintaining library records, assisting patrons, and handling cash requiring knowledge of basic library service techniques and applying techniques to a specialized area of the library system.

NOTE - CANDIDATES:
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.
  • Will be required to complete a pre-employment skills test.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at time of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire and maintain thereafter.

  • Performs paraprofessional library work for public desk service or for cataloging, classifying, and indexing library materials.
  • Assists with patron accounts, instructing and directing patrons to the use and location of specific materials, answering basic library questions or referring appropriately.
  • Uses the integrated library system, online databases, the Internet, electronic catalog and may assist with maintenance of library equipment, software, and/or hardware.
  • Assists with training staff and/or volunteers in specialized areas under the direction of a Library Associate, Library Specialist or Librarian.
  • Assists librarians in the operation of Children’s, Circulation, Computer/AV, Reference, or Technical Services sections.
  • Provides front-line, telephone, and/or electronic service to citizens and visitors.
  • Performs library functions such as registering new patrons, charging/discharging library items, resolving patron accounting matters, material retrieval, inventory control, collection of fines/fees, etc.
  • Performs branch or system-wide processing functions or data entry for Reference, Children’s Services, Computer/AV, the Library Support Center, etc.
  • Performs other library-related functions such as opening or closing an assigned section, shelving materials, shelf reading (keeping items in order on the shelves), searching for reserved or overdue materials, etc.
  • Under the direction of a librarian, assists with the preparation and implementation of various adult, teen, or children’s programs.
  • Assists with daily and/or weekly money deposits.
  • Attends workshops or meetings as required.
  • Performs related work as required.

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and two (2) years of customer service experience or experience as a Library Assistant or equivalent position. A comparable amount of education and training may be substituted for the minimum experience.

  • Knowledge of library techniques including shelving, sorting, alphabetization, and the Dewey Decimal system.
  • Knowledge of computer applications as applied to library services.
  • Knowledge of money counting procedures.
  • Ability to count/tabulate coins and bills to determine cash totals and make change.
  • Knowledge of data needed on checks and ability to read names, account numbers, amounts and related information on checks.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of library procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of reader interest, books, and authors, and of the theory and objectives of a public library system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with library staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records relating to collections, accounting for library materials, etc.
  • Ability to communicate concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to teach library techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race
