Massachusetts Maritime Academy/Cape Cod Director of the Writing Center

Location: Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts

General Statement of Duties: The Director of the Writing Resource Center, housed under the Academic Resources Department, will take the lead role in supporting student writing at the Academy. This position is a 12-month, in-person commitment.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the Writing Resource Center during the regular fall & spring semesters, along with several weeks during the Winter & Summer sessions.
  2. Assist with recruiting, hiring, & scheduling of tutors & serve as a writing tutor for 15-20 hours each week during the academic semesters, including winter & summer sessions.
  3. Train both writing & subject matter tutors, work with faculty on assignment design, writing workshops, writing groups, etc., & provide one-on-one assistance for faculty, as well as class presentations as needed.
  4. Serve as point person for students with documented reading/writing disabilities, offer occasional workshops for students & meet with tutors/students during occasional morning &/or evening hours.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree in English, writing, or related field
  2. 2+ years' experience running a writing center
  3. 5+ years' experience tutoring in writing
  4. Experience training tutors
  5. Experience and/or training in working with students with reading and/or writing disabilities
  6. Knowledge of current best practices in tutoring
  7. Excellent written & oral communication skills
  8. Ability to work collaboratively with the Academic Resources team
  9. Facility with Google Suite, Blackboard (or other LMS)

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Terminal degree in English, writing, or related field (PhD, MFA, etc.)
  2. Knowledge of MMA mission & curriculum
  3. Experience with software systems such as Accudemia, Slate or similar
  4. Vision for Writing Resource Center involving potential additions/adjustments to current system

Salary: $70,000 - $73,000 annually. The Academy offers generous benefits & a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications & experience. This position is exempt under the FLSA.
