Patient Care Technician - Cath/EP Labs - UI Heart and Vascular Center

The UI Heart and Vascular Center is seeking a full-time (100%) Patient Care Technician to support our Adult Cath/EP/Vascular Lab(s). Under direct supervision, performs specific tasks to assist members of the procedural team (physician, nurse, and imaging tech) in providing patient care within Adult Cath/EP/Vascular Lab(s).

Pay Grade: 5

Percent of Time: 100%

Schedule: 40 hours per week, (4) 10-hour shifts, Monday through Friday

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assists with lab preparation including stocking supplies and setup.
  • Assists in the management of daily deliveries of stores items to the procedural labs by putting items away and notifying nursing staff of items on backorder that are not received.
  • Performs quality controls on glucometer and maintains supplies to comply with regulatory guidelines. Performs blood glucose testing on patients as delegated.
  • Assists with checking outdates on supplies as delegated.
  • Assists with completing requisitions and other forms as directed, including preventative maintenance monitoring of equipment in the lab.
  • Shares responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies and for neatness and cleanliness of the lab.
  • Assists with procedural preparation including surgical clipping of appropriate skin areas.
  • Sets up and connects noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment to patients.
  • Reports pertinent patient information and incidents to the person in charge.
  • Assists in answering call lights and telephones.
  • Transports patients by bed, cart, or wheelchair between recovery units, procedural labs, and inpatient units.
  • Assists with lab turnover cleaning duties as delegated.
  • Performs basic CPR as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Assumes responsibility for ongoing self-learning and maintenance of clinical skills, analyzing own performance and setting goals.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally, electronically, and in writing with patients, family members, and healthcare staff.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to provide care with regard to patient condition and age.
  • Knowledge of principles of sanitation and health hazards.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, instruments, and supplies.
  • Ability to collect patient data and maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant is preferred.
  • Direct patient-care experience.
  • Experience working in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience providing customer service relations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
