Youth Services Librarian, Auburn Public Library (Auburn)

Summary

The Auburn Public Library is looking for a talented, dynamic, experienced individual to take charge of all of its youth-focused services. The selected individual will be responsible for supervising a team of Library Associates and Senior Library Associates in planning and executing all library services focused on children and teens, including but not limited to programming, collection development, marketing and promotions, and community outreach. The Auburn Public Library has an extremely engaged and enthusiastic youth user base, and the selected individual would be tasked with assessing and meeting the needs of this group with various programs such as story times, summer reading events, seasonal/holiday events, and teen advisory meetings, an expanded youth-focused collection of books, movies, music, and digital content, reader’s advisory assistance, computer assistance, and cultivation of warm, welcoming youth-focused areas. This individual would also be part of the library’s management team and would assist the library’s director with developing goals, policies, and the budget for the Auburn Public Library.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position, which includes one night per week and at least one Saturday per month.

Full List of Essential Duties

  1. Supervising and training of staff assigned to Youth Services
  2. Managing Library Associates, Senior Library Associates, pages, and volunteers, assigning tasks and verifying that they are completed properly
  3. Developing and maintaining all aspects of the children’s and teen collections, including books, periodicals, digital media, and databases
  4. Developing and coordinating programming for children and teens including but not limited to story times, summer reading, early literacy programs, after school programs, seasonal/holiday events, teen advisory meetings, etc.
  5. Managing marketing for all children and teen events and services, including creating and distributing promotional materials, creating posts for social media, doing outreach to schools and other related agencies, etc.
  6. Providing reference and reader advisory services for children, teens, parents, guardians, and educators
  7. Providing computer assistance with library hardware and software relevant to children, teens, parents, guardians, and educators
  8. Serving as part of the library management team, assists the library director in development of goals, objectives, policies, budgets, and grant applications
  9. Attending workshops, attending professional meetings, and reading current literature on library issues relating to children and teens
  10. Performing additional supervisory duties in the absence of the library director
  11. Performing related work as required

Qualifications

The ideal candidate must be highly knowledgeable about professional library methods and best practices, particularly those pertaining to children and teens, and must have a demonstrated ability to engage creatively with groups of young people, from babies to older teenagers. They must be knowledgeable about library administration, including collection development, event planning, and budgeting, and be versed in current supervisory practices pertaining to managing and motivating staff. They must be able to manage a diverse and dynamic library staff in a compassionate, collaborative manner. They must be able to maintain focus on completing tasks in the midst of a loud, busy children’s area prone to interruptions and must be able to set priorities accordingly. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must, as is a commitment to the highest caliber of patron service.

  12. Ability to plan and prioritize workload in order to complete assignments in a busy environment prone to interruptions
  13. Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate equipment. Able to move and lift materials up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and use a computer. Often required to push or pull book trucks weighing 150 pounds. May be required to stand for extended periods of time
