Summary

The Auburn Public Library is looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual to join its highly-collaborative team as a Library Associate. The selected individual would be responsible for regularly staffing the library’s busy circulation desk, assisting patrons with various library inquiries, including some technology troubleshooting. They would also be involved in supporting other library staff in developing and presenting library programs, collection development, and the planning and implementation of various library services.

This is an entry-level full-time (37.5 hours/week) position. There is the potential for occasional Saturday and evening hours.

This position falls within the Local 2936, United Steelworkers, AFL-CIO Collective Bargaining Unit.

Full List of Essential Duties

  1. Assisting patrons with circulation services, including checking regular circulating items in and out, checking museum passes in and out, registering patrons for library cards, resolving issues with patron library accounts, and placing holds.
  2. Helping patrons utilize library technology, including registering patrons for library computer use, assisting patrons in connecting to library Wi-Fi, and troubleshooting basic technology problems with library hardware and software.
  3. Assisting other staff members with collection management projects, including shelving, shelf-reading, weeding the collection, and providing recommendations for items to add to the collection.
  4. Processing new materials being added to the collection and deleting materials being removed from the collection.
  5. Performing basic repairs on damaged items.
  6. Assisting other staff members with planning and presenting library programs for children, teens, and adults.
  7. Providing basic readers’ advisory service to patrons.
  8. Performing related work as required.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and is committed to the highest caliber of patron service. They must be familiar with basic library functions and be comfortable interacting in a friendly, consistent manner with a wide variety of individuals in a very busy environment. Attention to detail is vital. They must be curious to learn new skills and be capable of pivoting between highly disparate tasks as the situation requires. The ideal candidate will function well under direct supervision but also be interested in taking initiative and capable of functioning independently for significant stretches of time. Highly developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills are welcomed.

  10. Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate equipment. Able to move and lift materials up to 25 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and use a computer. Often required to push or pull book trucks weighing 150 pounds. May be required to stand for extended periods of time.
