Job Description
The New York Times is seeking a news assistant to work on its Special Sections Desk, a team that produces about 100 various unique sections throughout the year. The ideal candidate will be an engaged and collegial team member with an interest in news. Flexibility and a desire to learn new skills are critical to success in this role.
Efficiency and strong organizational skills are a must, as the assistant will work closely with editors in coordinating and tracking the many steps involved in a particular section being produced from start to finish.
This job is based in New York.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and update the Special Section desk's editorial calendar in Airtable.
- Track articles as they move through the desk’s editing and approval process, and update with status and the names of the editors or writers associated with the work.
- Facilitate page approvals and closes in our layout system for every print Special Section, domestic and international. Meet daily with the Special Sections editor to review the status of current and upcoming projects.
- At a twice-daily desk meeting, one at 10 a.m. and one at 3:30 p.m., update the team on the status of current and upcoming sections.
- Create the agenda for a weekly Tuesday meeting with Special Sections desk heads and advertising teams. Take notes and follow up on scheduled and possible print Special Sections for both the domestic and international editions of the paper.
- Keep a Google drive folder updated with PDFs of completed print Special Sections.
- Track costs associated with freelancers in Airtable.
- Create calendars and various views in Airtable to assist editors/planners, as needed.
Basic Qualifications:
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Knowledge of Times style or the ability to absorb and apply it quickly
Preferred Qualifications:
- B.A or B.S degree
- Familiarity with Airtable
- Production and page layout experience

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $65,000.00 and $65,000.00.
