Additionally, the City celebrated the 10th Anniversary of The Newport News One City Marathon Weekend with a record number of 3,043 runners from 36 states, Washington D.C., Canada, and Mexico; and Amtrak, the City of Newport News, Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), CSX, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT), and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) partnered on the multimodal Newport News Transportation Center project.The City of Newport News is searching for a dynamic, innovative, and strategic Communications Director who will have the opportunity to work alongside the City Manager, the City’s Leadership Team, and the City Council to deliver cutting edge communications about the City of Newport News and its departments by leveraging 21st century communications tools, technology, and robust communications tactics through a thoughtfully designed social media strategy. The Communications Director is a vital member of the City’s Executive Team and plays a pivotal role in the continued evolution and development of the City. The Communications Director will provide strategic direction ensuring that the City’s communications are accurate, timely, and impactful. Key responsibilities include oversight of the City’s 311 Communications Division, Newport News Television programming, and media activities across print, digital, and social platforms and the City’s Tourism activities. The Director will coordinate complex projects, such as public campaigns, media briefings, special events, and community engagement activities, all while aligning efforts with the City’s strategic priorities. Qualifications Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree in business administration, communications or related field and 10 years of progressively responsible management experience with a local government or large corporate public communications. Five to seven years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is also required. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree and previous municipal government experience.Compensation and Benefits The expected hiring range is $145,000-$160,000, depending on qualifications, with an excellent benefits package.
