The Hussman School of Journalism and Media seeks a dynamic, innovative, and team-oriented librarian to serve as the director of its Park Library.
The position delivers proactive, client-centered education, research, and information services using a variety of methods and technologies. By combining a deep understanding of the role of libraries and librarians and experience meeting the unique needs of both core and non-traditional library users, the Librarian will seek to elevate the Park Library as a vibrant and integral part of all aspects of the School. The position is responsible for creating a patron experience that offers a seamless connection between the Library's services, physical collections, digital collections, physical space, and online presence.
The Librarian provides classroom, small group, and individual instruction in research techniques, literature reviews, and specialized reference databases. The Librarian will teach approximately 40-50 individual classes annually for a variety of the Hussman School's courses, including journalism, investigative reporting, marketing, Black press & U.S. history, public relations writing and campaigns, infographics, media management, undergraduate honors, and business journalism, among others. The incumbent will consult with graduate students (in groups or individually) on research for their projects, theses, and dissertations, as well as provide tailored orientation to various residential and remote graduate classes.
The Librarian works closely with publisher and vendor representatives, colleagues in the UNC Library system, and other groups across campus on all facets of book, journal, and electronic resource management. The Librarian is responsible for the evaluation, selection, acquisition, receipt, care, cataloguing, and display of all materials in the Park Library's collection (current and historic, in print and digital formats). The position conceptualizes and implements library services; conducts ongoing assessments of the library collections and needs; and develops web-based guides and other research and learning products as needed.
The incumbent may serve on library and university committees and is expected to be active in scholarly and professional organizations and the academic community. This Librarian also seeks opportunities to ally with campus, local, and national partners to develop mutually beneficial activities that attract and serve shared audiences.
The Librarian reports to the Dean and supervises the Equipment and Library Asset Manager who oversees the daily operations of the Park Library, including the circulation of equipment and gear used by students in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media.
