Job Title:  Protestant Music Director

The Protestant Music Director is responsible for providing musical leadership, accompaniment, and coordination for Protestant worship services and special events at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. Working in collaboration with the Protestant Chaplain, this role includes arranging, rehearsing, and leading the music portion of services while ensuring compliance with liturgical, copyright, and Chapel policies.

Key Responsibilities:Musical Leadership & Worship Accompaniment:
  • Play an instrument (organ, piano, keyboard, or guitar) for all Sunday Protestant services and special services.
  • Accompany and direct choirs, praise teams, and other musicians, ensuring musical selections align with the theme of worship services.
  • Teach new music to the Protestant Traditional Choir and the Contemporary Music Team.
  • Lead or accompany rehearsals as required, playing appropriate Christian-style worship music.
Personnel & Volunteer Management:
  • The contractor is responsible for recruiting, training, and managing personnel, including choir members and volunteer musicians.
  • Coordinate rehearsals and ensure choir and praise band members are adequately prepared for services.
  • Musicians must be available for rehearsals and all required services, including Sundays, Holy Days, and special events.
Service Coordination & Compliance:
  • Attend one rehearsal per week and accompany choir rehearsals if needed.
  • Plan and coordinate all musical selections with the Protestant Chaplain at least seven days prior to services.
  • Attend liturgy and music planning meetings to ensure musical selections align with worship themes.
  • Ensure compliance with copyright laws when printing, copying, and projecting music and lyrics.
Special Services & Rehearsals:
  • Play for special services such as:
    • Christmas Eve/Day
    • New Year’s Eve/Day
    • Four Chaplains’ Day
    • Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunrise Service
    • Memorials and other designated events
  • Conduct special worship rehearsals to ensure the quality of music for these events.
Administrative & Equipment Management:
  • Maintain routine and non-technical care of Chapel musical instruments and equipment.
  • Report required maintenance or repairs within three business days to the Contracting Officer Representative (COR).
  • Receive training and become proficient with Chapel sound boards/systems within 30 days of start date.
  • Submit budget requests and financial documentation for Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund (CTOF) and Appropriated Fund (APF).
Personnel Availability & Scheduling:
  • Personnel are required to be available during Chapel operational hours, including weekends, holidays, and special services as specified in the contract.
  • Must be present at least 30 minutes before services and 15 minutes before rehearsals for setup.
  • Ensure proper security of musical areas and equipment after services and rehearsals.
Compliance & Security Requirements:
  • Security Clearance and Background Checks are mandatory for all personnel.
  • Ensure adherence to Air Force Chapel policies regarding financial, administrative, and operational procedures.
Work Schedule & Reporting:
  • The contractor shall fulfill duties on Sundays, special services, and rehearsals, coordinating any schedule changes with the Contract Manager, Contracting Officer Representative (COR), and Protestant Chaplain.
  • Rehearsal schedules and service performances must be pre-coordinated to ensure a smooth worship experience.

This role requires musical expertise, leadership, and strong organizational skills to create an enriching worship atmosphere for the Protestant community at Edwards AFB.
