Job Title:  Catholic Music Director 

The Catholic Music Director is responsible for providing musical leadership, accompaniment, and coordination for Catholic Masses and liturgical services at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. Working in collaboration with the Catholic Priest, this role includes arranging, rehearsing, and leading the music portion of worship services while ensuring compliance with liturgical, copyright, and Chapel policies.

Key Responsibilities:Musical Leadership & Worship Accompaniment:
  • Play piano or organ for Sunday Mass, Catholic Holy Days of Obligation, and special liturgical services.
  • Recruit, train, and rehearse members of the Catholic Choir.
  • Accompany and direct musical selections while ensuring a high-quality worship experience.
  • Attend weekly rehearsals to prepare for Sunday Mass and special services.
  • Plan and coordinate all musical selections with the Catholic Priest at least seven days prior to services.
Personnel & Volunteer Management:
  • The contractor is responsible for recruiting, training, and managing personnel, including choir members and volunteer musicians.
  • Musicians must be available for rehearsals and all required services, including Sundays, Holy Days, and special events.
  • Communicate with the Catholic Priest, song leaders, and other musicians to ensure a coordinated and seamless worship experience.
Service Coordination & Compliance:
  • Ensure all worship music and media comply with copyright laws; do not copy or project materials unless properly licensed.
  • Attend liturgy and music planning meetings as needed to enhance the quality of Catholic liturgical music.
  • Coordinate all support requirements for musical programs with the Catholic Priest and Chapel staff in accordance with local policies.
Special Services & Rehearsals:
  • Play for Holy Days of Obligation and special liturgical services, including:
    • Confirmation
    • All Saints’ Day
    • Thanksgiving Vigil
    • Advent & Lent Penance Services
    • Feast of the Immaculate Conception
    • Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
    • Christmas Vigil, Midnight Mass, & Christmas Day Mass
    • New Year’s Vigil & New Year’s Day Service
    • Ash Wednesday & Holy Week Services (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday Vigil, Easter Sunday)
    • Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
    • Memorial Services
Administrative & Equipment Management:
  • Maintain routine and non-technical care of Chapel musical instruments during contract execution.
  • Report needed maintenance or repairs to the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) within three business days.
  • Receive training and become proficient with Chapel sound boards/systems within 30 days of the start date.
  • Submit budget requests and financial documentation for Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund (CTOF) and Appropriated Fund (APF) funding in a timely manner.
Personnel Availability & Scheduling:
  • Personnel are required to be available during Chapel operational hours, including weekends, holidays, and special services as specified in the contract.
  • Must be present at least 30 minutes before Mass and 15 minutes before rehearsals for setup.
  • Ensure proper security of musical areas and equipment after services and rehearsals.
  • The contractor shall not leave during the service unless pre-coordinated with the COR.
Compliance & Security Requirements:
  • Security Clearance and Background Checks are mandatory for all personnel involved in Catholic music ministries.
  • Ensure adherence to Air Force Chapel policies regarding financial, administrative, and operational procedures.
Work Schedule & Reporting:
  • The contractor shall fulfill duties on Sundays, Holy Days of Obligation, special services, and rehearsals, coordinating any schedule changes with the Contract Manager, Contracting Officer Representative (COR), and Catholic Priest.
  • Rehearsal schedules and service performances must be pre-coordinated to ensure a smooth liturgical experience.

This role requires musical expertise, leadership, and strong organizational skills to create an enriching Catholic worship environment at Edwards AFB.
