JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive communications program for the City of Athens.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  1. Coordinates with the Communications & Grant Manager to implement communication efforts for the City of Athens.
  2. Coordinates with various city departments to create and monitor communications and content across different platforms.
  3. Communicates and coordinates with elected and appointed officials at the local, state, and national level; advocates before national and state legislators to encourage support for city projects, programs, and operations.
  4. Coordinates and serves as mentor for the Mayor’s Youth Commission; works with public and private schools to recruit students; oversees the application and selection process; coordinates volunteer opportunities for students.
  5. Coordinates special community events.
  6. Develops and issues press releases in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  7. Makes speeches and presentations at public meetings and community events.
  8. Manages and updates information on the city website and various social media accounts.
  9. Develops and implements the city’s media communications and social media use policies.
  10. Performs related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 18 years or older. High School Diploma, GED and/or equivalent work experience. Valid Driver’s license. BS degree in a course of study related to the occupational field OR sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION: Knowledge of public relations and communications principles and practices. Knowledge of emergency communications principles and practices. Knowledge of media relations principles and the AP Style Guide. Knowledge of legislative processes and procedures. Knowledge of website and social media management principles. Skill in preparing press releases and in communicating with the news media. Skill in communicating with a wide variety of stakeholders, including elected and appointed officials at the state and national level. Skill in the coordination of special events. Skill in maintaining data and preparing reports. Skill in identifying problems and developing solutions. Skill in prioritizing and planning. Skill in interpersonal relations. Skill in oral and written communication.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table. The employee occasionally lifts light objects. The work is typically performed in an office. Physical strength, ability, and mobility to perform all essential job functions with or without accommodation. Must be willing to work overtime, non-standard work hours, holidays, shifts, and weekends as necessary. Must be willing to be on-call.
