Reports To:
High School Principal

Job Objective:
Plan, implement, and evaluate age appropriate learning experiences to achieve the school district’s mission. Provide direction and support to help students realize their intellectual, social, and vocational potentials. Actively involve parents and colleagues as learning partners.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A valid State of Ohio teaching certificate or license for teaching assignment.
  2. Evidence of a clear record as determined by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII).
  3. A degree from an accredited college or university with a major in instrumental music.
  4. Evidence of coaching, managerial, musical, and choreography skills.

Job Duties, Responsibilities, and Essential Functions:

  1. Responsible for the continuous improvement in the music program in the elementary, middle and high school.
  2. Fulfill the responsibilities of the Marching Band Director.
  3. Provide individual and group instruction to students to develop their musical skills and talents.
  4. Organize and facilitate performances, concerts, and other musical events both within the school and in the community.
  5. Collaborate with other faculty members to integrate music into interdisciplinary projects and activities.
  6. Attend Music Booster’s meetings. In conjunction with the other Kirtland Music Staff, guide and provide leadership advice for the Kirtland Music Boosters.
  7. Develop and implement a rigorous and engaging music curriculum aligned with Ohio Academic Content Standards for Fine Arts.
  8. Participate in course work, workshops, seminars, etc., that support and enhance the music programs.
  9. Demonstrate subject matter competence and teaching proficiency.
  10. Ensure the learning process is guided toward the adopted curricular goals, objectives, and proficiencies. Analyze student needs and adjust the curriculum to address individual learning patterns.
  11. Establish a learning environment for students that encourages self reliance and group responsibility.
  12. Cooperate with Guidance Department staff to ensure appropriate student progress with social and emotional development.
  13. Give students positive feedback that encourages adult behavior and the development of appropriate short and long term goals.
  14. Prepare and carry out daily lesson plans (e.g., written clearly, usable, and sequential).
  15. Present material using a variety of approaches, techniques, and media aids to provoke interest, enthusiasm, and curiosity about subjects and events.
  16. Attempt to develop rapport and maintain the confidence of parents and students. Provide periodic progress reports to parents using telephone calls, notes, interim reports, report cards, and conferences.
  17. Maintain accurate classroom records, reports, and inventories, as directed.
  18. Ensure the confidentiality of privileged information.
  19. Complete appropriate student referral forms as needed for possible assessment.
  20. Consult with pupil services staff regarding instruction modifications, classroom adjustments, and/or other methods that support the attainment of educational goals for students with disabilities.
  21. Assist as a team member with the development of Individualized Education Programs (I.E.P.) for each student identified as disabled.
  22. Consult with the Intervention Assistance Team, when requested.
  23. Share in the responsibility for authorized committee work, when requested.
  24. Suggest equipment or teaching techniques that will enhance the educational process.
  25. Promote the proper care of school property, equipment, textbooks, supplies, and other materials. Account for school resources used by students.
  26. Help communicate school rules to students. Maintain high standards for student conduct and enforce discipline according to classroom/school policy and the due process rights of students.
  27. Prepare the assigned classroom at the beginning of the year. Retrieve inventory of supplies and equipment as required. Store equipment and supplies at the end of the school year.
  28. Participate in after school programs (e.g., open house, parent conferences, etc.). Voluntarily support parent organization activities as time permits.
  29. Participate in professional growth activities (e.g., professional associations, course work, workshops, seminars, etc.). Share knowledge with colleagues.
  30. Model life-long learning to staff and students.
  31. Serve as a role model for students. Demonstrate responsibility, citizenship, respect, and courtesy.
  32. Perform other duties, as directed.

Physical and Mental Abilities Required:

  1. Ability to move freely throughout the building.
  2. Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or supplies weighing up to fifty pounds.
  3. Ability to work with students in activities that may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively using language and writing skills.
  5. Ability to maintain a non-punitive relationship with students and demonstrate fairness and patience while respecting their confidences.
  6. Ability to facilitate the exchange of ideas leading to a group consensus.
  7. Ability to react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
  8. Ability to organize and complete tasks efficiently with minimal supervision.
  9. Ability to maintain a tactful disposition in dealing with administrators, staff, students, parents, and the public.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Under the direction of the Principal: schedule work assignments, provide instructions and communicates expectations to Educational Aides, student teachers, and volunteers, when assigned.

Working Conditions:
Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
Occasional interaction with agitated or upset parents/public.
Frequent interaction with disruptive or unruly children.
Frequent exposure to student commotion.
Work under stress to meet schedules and deadlines.
Work cooperatively with others.
Considerable paperwork is required.
Duties may require occasional work during the evening and/or weekend.
