Overall Responsibilities

The Broadcast Engineer I role provides technical support and system administrator services for all broadcast and streaming television and IT systems as needed by Weather Group Television, and applies a holistic approach to meeting strategic objectives through production technical process and system engineering of audio, video and IT systems. This is a great opportunity for an established broadcast facility and video systems engineer to expand their skills in engineering technical systems management. We welcome candidates who want to work in a strong team atmosphere, and who can think creatively while supporting our live production environment. We design systems that enable us to provide state-of-the-art production services for Weather Group Television & Allen Media operations.

The Broadcast Engineer I will participate in engineering group projects, review designs submitted by other internal and external design resources, and will lead efforts to make sure all document and technical standards are supported and met. They will integrate broadcast and IT technical equipment using clean and easy to support wiring practices, troubleshoot technical issues by utilizing a solid knowledge of a mixed analog/digital, SDI/IP broadcast environment, and will provide engineering project support.

The Broadcast Engineer I may be occasionally called on to help support project development on systems they administer by assisting our design engineering staff on key initiatives.

Reports to the Director of Broadcast Engineering Support.

Troubleshoots, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance of television broadcast and production equipment including the following:

  • Satellite receivers, controllers, & antennas
  • Wireless mics and IFB systems
  • Broadcast Servers
  • Intercom systems
  • Broadcast Cameras
  • Broadcast Vizrt & WSI graphics systems
  • Morpheus station automation
  • Video and Audio Routers
  • ENG gear
  • Master control switchers
  • Non-linear editing systems
  • Production switchers
  • Editing Systems
  • Video servers
  • Emergency Generator and UPS systems
  • While serving as Engineer On Duty, carries a cell phone in order to be contacted for emergency issues while on shift.
  • Will carry a on-call cell phone for off hours support (assigned on a rotating basis).
  • Performs daily checks of critical broadcast equipment to ensure operational performance meets specified standards.
  • Monitors and corrects or improves the quality of the video/audio signal for TWC & Allen Media Channels.
  • Diagnoses and solves broadcast systems problems.
  • Acts as System Administrator on critical broadcast computer systems.
  • Maintains a knowledge of the operation and maintenance of the TWC uplink facility, and occasionally performs system checks.
  • Maintains records which include, but are not limited to, Engineering shift logs, Engineering Service Request forms, parts and equipment inventories, equipment maintenance & repair histories, etc.
  • Ensures that system and equipment documentation is current. Specifies, demonstrates, and evaluates new television broadcast and production equipment.
  • Proactively communicates the status of Engineering issues to Engineering Management and to Broadcast Engineering customers.
  • Works as a part of a team to continually develop and improve processes used to support Broadcast Engineering customers.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years technical training and a minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience as a Broadcast Support Engineer working with IT, IP Video, and traditional broadcast video system solutions.
  • Ability to read and understand AutoCad documentation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in supporting and configuring Broadcast Video Systems, Broadcast Related Computer Systems, IT Networks, IP Video Networks and Servers.
  • Proficient in the use of related test equipment including, but not limited to, waveform monitors, vectorscopes, multimeters, oscilloscopes, test signal generators, spectrum analyzers, data and network analyzers etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer networking systems, servers, VM’s and related software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Must be able to work in a multitasking environment.
  • Must be able to lead a team to successful task completion.
  • Must be a self-starter and be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift and move equipment as required.

  • Knowledge of advanced Windows, Linux and Mac OSX operating systems.
  • Knowledge of video compression technology and digital transmission technology.
  • Other duties as directed.
