Role purpose and overview
As an Overnight Producer, your role will cover digital content production across various desks and homepage production, with some responsibility for social media for The Telegraph overnight, UK time.
You'll liaise closely with our California-based Overnight Editor but you should be comfortable making editing decisions independently.
This is a busy, varied role where the ability to effectively manage multiple tasks - including writing - is key.
The role will work day shifts to accommodate the desired time-zone coverage (usually 10.30pm to 6.30am, 11pm to 7am or 12am to 8am UK time) and will include weekend shifts on a rota basis. The successful candidate will be based on the West Coast of the US.
Key responsibilities
- Working directly with the Overnight Editor to write, produce, and publish digital content to a high standard, rich in pictures, videos, and graphics, with the best headlines. Making sure anything published meets UK legal and IPSO standards.
- Ensuring that all major stories across News, Foreign, Business, and Sport are covered and updated during the shift. Monitoring news wires, other websites, overnight newspapers, social media, and search trends.
- Sending out app notifications and Breaking News emails where appropriate.
- Planning and commissioning content to give the morning team a rolling start, such as setting up a live blog for a morning event in advance.
- Making sure the website and app homepages, including the US homepage, are maintained to a high standard overnight and are in good order for the morning UK audience.
- Promoting stories published overnight on social media.
- Being ready and willing to pick up any other tasks that need doing during UK overnight hours, including coverage of major world events.
- Monitoring analytics to understand what is performing well and what could be improved.
- Receiving and sending handovers to various London desks and maintaining good communication to ensure the Telegraph's audience is serviced 24/7.
- Compiling the final overnight memo to send to London at 6am.
- Writing and producing live blogs to cover key breaking news stories.

Essential
- Able to work quickly and calmly, managing many responsibilities during a shift. A good decision maker.
- Immaculate attention to detail.
- Experience writing.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively across the world.
- Experience of working for a major digital news publisher.
- Excellent news and picture judgement.
- Experience with social media and SEO is preferred.
- An understanding of analytics tools would be beneficial.
- Understanding of the Telegraph audience and subscription model is also desirable.
