About the Department/College
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Northern Arizona University prepares highly effective, culturally diverse speech, language, and hearing professionals to serve and advocate for individuals in their communities. We provide innovative, accessible, student-centered educational programs in an inclusive and caring environment.
We offer a Master of Science degree in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology through a competitive full-time or part-time (Summer Track) program. The Summer Track program includes cohorts of students at both the Flagstaff Mountain Campus and at the NAU Yuma campus. We also offer an undergraduate degree to prepare students for graduate work in speech-language pathology and audiology, as well as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant certificate program. In addition, the department operates the Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at the Flagstaff Mountain campus where members of the community can receive services for a variety of communication and hearing disorders, and graduate students participate and learn.
The Department is housed in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS). The College of Health and Human Services is northern Arizona's hub for inclusive and equitable health and wellness education. With programs available in Flagstaff, Yuma and online, including the 30-acre Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC) in the heart of Downtown Phoenix where NAU, UA, and ASU are co-located. About the Position
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Assistant Clinical Professor at the Flagstaff Mountain Campus. The individual in this position will serve as the academic and clinical coordinator, as well as an advisor for the students in the part-time Summer Track Master's degree program in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology.
This position is a 12-month clinical non-tenure eligible position, beginning June 2, 2025.
The successful candidate will provide guidance to graduate students throughout their 38-month program, monitor their clinical practicum experiences, and maintain regular contact with off-campus clinical supervisors, which may require some travel to clinical sites.
Teaching responsibilities will include conducting face-to-face and/or online classes within the department, as well as leading weekly seminar meetings for Summer Track clinical practicum students. Service to the department will involve assisting the Department Chair in overseeing the Summer Track curriculum and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. There will also be opportunities for direct clinical supervision of students and participation in scholarly activities.
Responsibilities Include:
- Facilitating the academic and clinical education of graduate students enrolled in the Summer Track Master's degree program in Clinical Speech-Language Pathology.
- Advising graduate students during their 38-month program of study.
- Monitoring students' clinical practicum experiences.
- Maintaining regular contact with off-campus clinical supervisors, which may include some travel to clinical sites.
- Overseeing the admissions process for the Summer Track program.
- Teaching the online clinical methods class for the Summer Track students.
- Facilitating grand rounds, seminars, and praxis preparation for Summer Track students.
- Teaching additional face-to-face and/or online classes in the individual's areas of expertise.
- Assisting the Department Chair in monitoring the Summer Track curriculum and adherence to accreditation standards.
- Ensuring adherence to federal, state, and ASHA requirements for clinical education programs.
- Tracking graduation, post-graduation, and employment data.
- Direct clinical supervision of students.
- Participation in service to the department, college, university, and profession.
- Participation in scholarly activities.
This position is an on-site position at the Flagstaff Mountain Campus which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
- Current ASHA certification.
- Eligibility for Arizona state licensure and certification by the Arizona Department of Education.
- At least three years of experience as a practicing speech-language pathologist assessing and treating individuals with communication disorders.
- Experience supervising SLP and/or SLPA student clinicians.
- A record of personal and/or professional experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching face-to-face and/or online Communication Sciences and Disorders courses.
- Three or more years of experience supervising SLP and/or SLPA student clinicians.
- Proficient in designing, teaching, and managing courses using a learning management system (e.g. Canvas).
- Doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology or related field.
- Interest in conducting and collaborating in research.
- Experience working as a Speech-Language Pathologist in a variety of clinical settings (schools, skilled nursing facilities, etc.).
- Knowledge of ASHA supervision and certification requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
This position requires professional knowledge in the field of speech-language pathology as well as strong organizational skills. The position requires data analysis, student advisement, and coordination of student clinicians for fieldwork experiences which require considerable attention to detail and the ability to keep track of conversations held with over 100 students in the summer track.
Driving Requirement
Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed.
Compensation & Benefits
Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
This is a Faculty (FAC) position.
