Job Description Reporting to the Manager Communications and Engagement, the Senior Media and Communications Advisor is the primary point of contact for media and is responsible for developing and implementing communications plans that engage the community and enhance and protect the City’s reputation. The successful candidate will be joining a strong, collaborative, supportive and friendly team in a dynamic and varied working environment. With many things going on around the city and an engaged local press, the post-holder will benefit from a balance of proactive and reactive activity. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and will quickly build positive relationships with key stakeholders. They will keep an ear-to-the-ground and ensure events, services and projects are effectively promoted through owned and earned print and digital channels, with messaging aligned to the City’s strategic goals and direction. Please note this is a 12-month contract to cover a period of parental leave. Applicants seeking both full-time and part-time working arrangements will be considered (part-time applicants would be appointed as job-share arrangement). The key responsibilities of this role are to: Organise media opportunities to highlight the City’s strategic vision and manage day-to-day media enquiries and interview requests consistent with internal processes. Identify, write and publish news stories to the City’s website and other internal publications. Work with the Senior Communications Officer – Digital to leverage stories across owned platforms. Co-ordinate internal and external approval of media and external news materials, including liaising directly with the Mayor. Accompany the Mayor (the official City spokesperson) to media and promotional opportunities and provide guidance as appropriate. Work with the Manager Communications and Engagement to execute media responses to current and emerging issues and/or crises. Provide strategic media advice and support to the Mayor, CEO, Executive Team and other key internal stakeholders, both in preparation for developing media matters and in response to known issues. Report on media activity and coverage. Prepare publications, advertorials and advertisements as required. Please note, as the main media contact for the City, some after hours or occasional weekend work will be required. Supporting the broader outcomes of the Communications and Engagement team and the City, the successful candidate will be an experienced professional who can drive exceptional media and communications outcomes as part of a collaborative and positive team culture. They will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual with: Tertiary qualifications in public relations, communications or journalism. At least five years’ media relations experience within a complex organisation. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing innovative communications plans and strategies that enhance and protect reputation. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Significant experience preparing content for diverse audiences across owned and earned print and digital channels. Sound project management skills. Excellent time management skills with a demonstrated ability to produce high quality work within demanding deadlines. Ability to communicate complex concepts in easily understood language. Demonstrated ability to maintain diverse and effective working relationships. Ability to use corporate computer systems and website content management systems (CMS). Local government experience (desirable but not essential). Salary Package From $109,200 to $120,390 per annum, plus 11.5% employer superannuation and additional co-contribution to your superannuation.
