The Opportunity

AAU is excited to announce the search for a Social Media Manager. As a member of AAU's Communications Team, this role will develop and execute a comprehensive, creative, and engaging social media strategy to enhance AAU's brand visibility and policy advocacy efforts with key audiences. The Social Media Manager will create original content to engage federal policymakers, journalists, and key policy influencers while planning and executing targeted campaigns using written, graphic, and multimedia content. Additionally, the Social Media Manager will propose relevant and timely social media initiatives, manage digital assets, and provide limited design support for AAU products.

The Social Media Manager will monitor and engage with AAU's online community, fostering relationships with members, stakeholders, and influencers to amplify the organization's messaging. The Social Media Manager will analyze performance metrics, recommend new engagement strategies, and evaluate emerging social media technologies. Additionally, the Social Media Manager will support AAU and joint advocacy campaigns by drafting ad copy, producing graphics and videos, and managing digital ad placements. The role also includes curating university research-related story content for AAU's website and social media channels to further the organization's objectives.

This position operates primarily on-site at AAU's Washington, DC office and other locations for meetings and events as required. After the initial 90 days of employment, this role is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that requires at least three days in the office each week.

This position is classified as salaried and exempt.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • By the date of hire, applicants must reside within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience in digital media, social media management, and/or digital marketing.
  • A working knowledge of Office 365 applications, including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
  • Familiarity with online measurement platforms (e.g. Google Analytics, Meltwater, Facebook Insights, X Insights, and LinkedIn Analytics).
  • Experience working with web content management systems such as Drupal or Craft; design software such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite; and social media management software such as Publer.
  • Knowledge of or experience with mass email systems such as Marketing Cloud and email template development frameworks such as MJML.
  • Proficiency in applying skills and knowledge to fulfill responsibilities while continuously developing expertise with appropriate oversight.
  • Capacity to prioritize tasks with accuracy and attention to detail, ensuring timely, high-quality work while seeking guidance when needed.
  • Demonstrated initiative in exercising sound judgment, taking on new tasks, and identifying process improvements.
  • Skill in fostering teamwork by valuing input, collaborating effectively, and treating colleagues with respect and fairness.
  • Effectiveness in communicating clearly and professionally, following instructions, sharing information appropriately, and engaging in meaningful dialogue.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in non-profit, association, higher education, and/or agency setting.
  • Comfort with basic conventions of HTML/CSS or willingness to quickly learn.

Compensation

The total compensation package for this role includes:

  • A base annual salary ranging from $73,000 - $78,000 (commensurate with experience).
