Job Description

Smart Cities Dive, a publication of Informa TechTarget, is looking for an editor to report, write, edit and manage daily newsletter production. We're seeking a talented journalist who wants to break news and dig deep into the issues driving city operations and management as well as shape the team’s coverage for optimal impact and readability.

Smart Cities Dive covers how local governments are using new strategies and technologies to become more open, accountable, efficient, effective, equitable, resilient, responsive, and sustainable. In addition to our coverage of how cities and counties use technology and data, we look at innovations in transportation, housing and zoning, climate change and resilience, buildings and design, public safety and governance.

You will own your beat by cultivating relationships with key stakeholders and consistently staying on top of important developments. You will pitch and report several original stories each week and write deeper analyses, features or investigative pieces throughout the year. You'll also help shape the content of staff and freelance reporters by workshopping story ideas, providing constructive feedback, editing copy and building the newsletter daily. You’ll be a part of a fast-growing digital product in a growing newsroom that gives you the freedom to showcase your creativity.

The company headquarters are in Newton, Mass.; this publication is based in Washington, D.C., and offers the opportunity for in person, remote or hybrid work.

Qualifications

  • Experience level: 3 years at a minimum, strong preference for direct experience reporting on one or more of the topics listed above.
  • Proven track record of reporting, writing and editing news stories, preferably on city issues, technologies or related topics. An ability to produce ambitious and innovative reporting projects.
  • Ability to quickly take ownership of specific beats through original reporting and source-building.
  • Aptitude for shaping news stories for the government and business leaders that serve this space, including through the use of data journalism, public financial filings or source documents and public records requests.
  • Ability to coach and guide reporters to cover news and develop longer-term features.
  • Experience with substantive editing, copyediting and fact-checking content as well as writing SEO-savvy web headlines.
  • Strong digital news knowledge and aptitude.
  • Comfort with social media and the ability to build an audience on major platforms to enhance the scope and reach of your work.
  • Proven ability to consistently conceive of, report, write and publish same-day news stories.
  • Ability to work with a fast-paced, dynamic team that publishes a daily audience-specific newsletter.
  • Curiosity and inclination to dig deeper into complex subjects and desire to achieve excellence in journalism.
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism, English or similar field.

Additional Information

The salary range for the role is $60k -80k USD depending on experience.
