Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Evidence of a clear record as determined by the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI.)
- Ability to type 30+ words per minute.
- Experience with library procedures and equipment.
- Evidence of experience using computer and technology equipment.
- Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Excel / Word, and also Google gmail, Docs and Sheets.
- Evidence of an interest in reading and education.
- Evidence of a successful experience working with school age children.
- Ability to achieve proficiency using the Dewey Decimal System.
and Essential Functions:
- Perform routine functions to maintain an orderly and functional circulation system (e.g., sorting, filing, organizing, and cataloging, reserve materials, check out materials, maintain circulation records, write notifications for overdue books , account for fines, document receipt of films and video tapes, etc.).
- Provide orientation to instruct staff and students in Library services. Collaborate with teachers to create library lessons. Assist with class assignments that encourage increased use of library resources and/or using technology. Prepare and present special topics to classes, when requested.
- Schedule and supervise regular classroom visits. Prepare lesson plans and conduct age appropriate library skills class.
- Plan and prepare the bulletin boards and displays that promote interest, enthusiasm, and curiosity about subjects and events.
- Help staff and students find materials and develop research skills to retrieve information using a variety of media forms. Collect and reserve material for special activities, when requested.
- Assist with the research and preparation of materials for teachers. Provide individual instruction and assistance to students, as warranted.
- Consult with staff regarding instructional adjustments, environmental modifications, and other methods that support the attainment of educational goals for students with disabilities.
- Ensure the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Learn about the use and care Library resources and equipment. Check equipment and materials. Mend books and make minor equipment repairs. Perform preventive maintenance and cleaning of equipment and materials to avoid premature failure. Discard outdated or worn materials. Set up equipment, when required.
- Maintain effective communications with school staff by means of bulletins, memos, meetings, training programs, and personal assistance.
- Consult with staff to evaluate library needs. Assist with the selections of an assortment of print and non-print materials (e.g., books, periodicals, equipment, etc.).
- Catalog and introduce new acquisitions to students and staff using book talks, displays, exhibits, bibliographies, etc.
- Keep current with emerging library trends and community resources. Act as a liaison with organizations providing audio visual, technological and other resource materials. Process and maintain records of interlibrary loans.
- Keep books, periodicals, pamphlets, etc., properly shelved. Keep the Library orderly. Perform general housekeeping duties.
- Promote the proper care of library property, equipment, textbooks, supplies, and other materials. Account for library resources used by staff and students.
- Communicate school rules to students. Maintain high standards for student conduct and enforce discipline according to board policy and the due process rights of students. Provide positive feedback to motivate students to develop and maintain appropriate behavior. Consistently confront undesirable behavior firmly and fairly.
- Prepare and type reports and other library materials (e.g., bibliographies, forms, catalog cards, etc.). Maintain records (e.g., daily circulation, inventories, magazine holdings, audiovisual aids, new materials, etc.). Maintain files (e.g., catalog cards, shelf list cards, vertical file materials, publishers catalog, audio visual catalogs, etc.). Compile pertinent data to help district administrators with planning and evaluating library services.
- Assist with the management of departmental communications (e.g., mail, inquires, questionnaires, catalogs, etc.). Prepare boxes and films to insure safe shipping.
- Prepare a year-end inventory of all books, equipment and materials.
- Suggest equipment and resource materials that will enhance the educational process. Share in the responsibility of authorized committee work, as requested.
- Prepare the Library/Media Center at the beginning of the year. Retrieve inventory of supplies and equipment as directed, Store equipment and supplies at the end of the school year.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and training programs. Participate in professional growth activities, when requested.
- Serve as a role model for students. Demonstrate responsibility, citizenship, respect, and courtesy.
- Perform other duties, as directed.
- Ability to move freely throughout the building.
- Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or supplies weighing up to twenty pounds.
- Ability to work with young children in activities that may require stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Ability to communicate effectively using language and writing skills.
- Ability to maintain a non-punitive relationship with students and demonstrate fairness and patience while respecting their confidences.
- Ability to react productively to frequent interruptions and changing conditions.
