JOB TITLE - Communications Manager CALVARY WOMEN’S SERVICES MISSION: Calvary Women’s Services offers housing, health, education, and employment programs that empower homeless women in Washington, DC, to transform their lives. JOB SUMMARY: The Communications Manager manages and executes Calvary’s external communications strategy, with the goal of raising awareness of Calvary’s mission and programs with target audiences. The position also develops and implements strategies and activities for communications that support donor relations and fundraising. The Communications Manager is an integral part of the Development Team, reports to the Chief Development Officer, and works closely with all teams in the organization to coordinate communications efforts. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Communications/Public Relations Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies that align with organizational goals. Develop and oversee the creation of high-quality, engaging content, including press releases, newsletters, social media posts, blog articles, and more. Oversee the creation, curation, and management of website content to ensure it is up-to-date, accurate, and engaging. Develop and manage content calendars to include social media for announcements, fundraising initiatives, newsletters, and program updates. Manage Calvary’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube). Coordinate with the finance and programmatic teams to develop an annual report, program brochures, information packets, and other outreach material. Collaborate with designers, writers, and photographers to produce materials and artwork. Work with program staff, clients, volunteers, and donors to share compelling stories about Calvary’s work. Special Events Collaborate with the Development team to lead online fundraising campaigns. Ensure the visibility of event sponsors and coordinate their participation. Coordinate with event vendors and volunteers, as appropriate. Assist the Development team with events hosted by the Board of Directors and other supporters of Calvary. Appeals and Mailings Write compelling and creative text supporting other communications and fundraising work, as needed. Create and distribute a monthly e-newsletter and a quarterly print newsletter. In collaboration with the development team, create fundraising materials for donor-related communications (i.e., fundraising emails and donor appeal letters). Write and distribute email blasts to donors with time-sensitive information and needs. Media Relations Manage media relations, develop contacts with members of the local media, and maintain a press contact list. Proactively identify opportunities for placing articles, op-ed pieces, and letters to the editor in partnership with staff and members. Compose press releases and op-eds in partnership with the CEO and CDO. Create and distribute press releases, press kits, background sheets, and other materials. General Tasks and Other Responsibilities Lead tours of the programs. Speak in the community on behalf of Calvary Women's Services. Other duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Solid, working knowledge of graphic design software, including InDesign and Photoshop; functional knowledge of HTML is a plus. Expertise in social media content and posting. Creativity, initiative, and passion for Calvary’s mission. Ability to develop strong relationships with donors, volunteers, and colleagues. Superb writing and proofreading skills, including experience writing press releases, annual reports, advertisements, and related materials. Excellent organizational skills and high level of attention to detail and accuracy. Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks, responsibilities, and deadlines. Enthusiastic team player, able to pitch in on a variety of projects. Willingness to participate in and develop knowledge of programs and activities throughout the organization. Familiarity with homelessness, domestic violence, or related issues is a plus. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing/Communications or related field and at least three years of relevant work experience. WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS: Own transportation is required for trips out of the office. Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing less than or equal to 30 pounds without assistance. Reach overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Climbing: Ascending or descending multiple flights of stairs, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Stand, sit, or walk for an extended period.
