Pay Range : $23.00 - $30.00 / hour commensurate with skills and experience

Reports to : Managing Paralegal

About the Role : CAIR-CA provides legal immigration services to refugees, asylum seekers, and the diverse immigrant community in California through our Immigrant's Rights Center (IRC). The Paralegal / Legal Coordinator will report to the Immigrant's Rights Associate Legal Manager and is primarily responsible for case management and administrative support to our Immigrant Rights Attorneys.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Conduct client intakes and legal screenings to provide consultations.
  • Provide in-house referrals for callers with issues within CAIR's scope of legal expertise or refer out to external practitioners for callers with issues outside of CAIR's scope of legal expertise.
  • Prepare immigration applications and petitions for submission to the appropriate agency under the supervision of an attorney or DOJ Accredited Representative.
  • Handle full case load of immigration cases under the case management program, attorney correspondence files, databases, and calendars.
  • Assist with gathering and maintaining clients' data for grant and legal reports, including data collection, testimonials, and narrative writing.
  • Assist in community outreach and educational activities through the Sacramento Central Valley Region, including planning and conducting legal clinics, and other community events.
  • Attend training and professional development opportunities related to case management and immigration procedures
  • All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, processing mail, weekly outreach, fundraising, organizing and filing documents.

  • Perform job-related special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director and project staff

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree and / or at least two years of paralegal or related experience.
  • Department of Justice (DOJ) certified is preferred but not required.
  • Fluent in Arabic, Farsi / Dari, Pashto or Urdu in both written and oral communication is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with supporting immigrant and refugee community and or working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and / or non-profit organizations preferred.
  • Professional integrity and ability to maintain discretion and client confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, ability to multi-task, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, be flexible, and work well under pressure in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Along with excellent research and writing skills.
  • Ability to interface with community members, clients, and potential clients with a high degree of professionalism and care.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, and familiar with other Microsoft Office programs including MS Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and database software.
  • Working Conditions and Physical Effort : Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and / or walking.
