The communications specialist works within Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) Marketing and Communications to provide strategic marketing and communications support across OAA reporting units. This individual works to strategize, prepare and produce communications (i.e., presentations, email campaigns, newsletters, marketing/editorial content, website/digital content and strategic projects) to elevate academic life and impact at Ohio State for students, faculty, and communities the university serves.
The communications specialist works across OAA with a focus on the Office of International Affairs (OIA). OIA provides leadership and international expertise to ensure a coordinated and dynamic strategy for university-wide global engagement. To further Ohio State’s international goals and to advance the university’s reputation worldwide, OIA facilitates international experiences for students and faculty, supports academic programs and research, coordinates international partnerships, administers grants and scholarships for global engagement and contributes to enriching the Ohio State experience for the university’s international student and scholar population.
This position requires collaboration across units and multiple stakeholder groups to gather and share information and produce high-quality communications. Serves as the lead communicator for International Students and Scholars and has primary responsibilities for developing communications for new and current international students, including developing pre-arrival messages and promoting international student resources and educational content (including around maintaining immigration status). Also supports one or more additional offices/units within OAA or OIA. Increases visibility of and engagement with programs, activities and research through multiple channels including social media (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube), newsletters, print and digital publications. Manages, tracks and analyzes social media performance to drive strategy. Conducts interviews to write compelling stories about international students/activities, research, faculty, students and alumni; plans and identifies strategic approaches and campaigns for specific projects and initiatives; provides communications support for signature events; manages projects, work flows and timelines as part of OAA Marketing and Communications processes; updates and manages content on websites in compliance with university-wide digital accessibility standards; provides editorial support and creative input across the team; builds and maintains relationships with communications peers across the university. Serves as an advocate for the university brand, editorial and style guidelines.
Education and Experience
Required: Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations or an equivalent combination of education and experience; minimum two years of professional writing/strategic communications experience; demonstrated organizational, collaborative, social media, writing, editing and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Desired: Knowledge of AP style. Experience in digital content management (including social media, websites and email), storytelling, strategic marketing and communications and project management.
Additional Information:
The target hiring range for this job profile is $51,000 - 53,591. The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limited to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
