Job Description
Location: Denham Springs/Walker Branch
Schedule: 40 hours weekly
Monday 1 pm - 9 am; Tuesday - Friday 9 am - 5 pm
Saturday rotation every 4th week (off on the Friday before)
General Information:
The Reference Librarian will work to fulfill the Livingston Parish Library's objectives and assist patrons in accessing, understanding, and utilizing the system's services and collections. The Reference Librarian recommends, interprets, evaluates, and disseminates information resources to help patrons with specific information needs. The position will assist patrons in person, on the phone, via email, and by booking and performing Book-A-Librarian sessions. This is a front-facing position with constant interaction with the public. Good customer service skills are a must.
This position reports directly to the Branch Manager and has no supervisory duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Acts as the senior librarian for the Adult Reference section and mentors other staff working that service point.
- Assists library patrons in conducting research and locating resources.
- Assists the Branch Manager or Assistant Branch Manager with librarian-associated tasks such as counting money, weeding, generating reports, technology troubleshooting, collection relocation, and training new staff.
- Books and performs one-on-one Book-A-Librarian sessions with patrons.
- Creates and maintains book displays based on administrative guidelines.
- Develop pathfinders, instructional materials, and how-to guides to promote library collections.
- Inform the Branch Manager of collection, supply, building, and equipment needs.
- Instructs patrons in using public computers, printing, word processing, general internet searching, and databases.
- Keeps all work areas, personal spaces, service points, and patron areas free of clutter and unnecessary materials.
- Maintains knowledge of library policies and procedures.
- Performs other functions or special projects as assigned by the Branch Manager or Library Administration.
- Processes ILL and material purchase requests for patrons.
- Provides excellent customer service to patrons in person, online, via email, and over the phone.
- Serves on library committees.
- Shelves books, reads shelves, and shifts materials as necessary.
- Works branch service points as needed, including Circulation, Adult Reference, Youth Services, and the Computer Lab.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to communicate clearly and accurately with patrons and staff.
- Ability to meet and relate to patrons and staff members positively and constructively.
- Ability to work independently, within the direction of the Branch Manager or Assistant Branch Manager, and on teams.
- Familiarity with ADA compliance.
- Initiative to determine and complete needed tasks.
- Knowledge of computers, automated search methods, and Microsoft Office suite.
- Working knowledge of library-provided databases and other electronic services, print and electronic materials, and how to assist patrons with finding information.
Education and Work Experience:
Required:
- Masters of Library and Information Science (MLIS or MLS)
Preferred:
- Two or more years of experience working in a public library.
- Experience in instruction or providing public presentations.
