JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implements outreach programming for children from birth through 5 years of age that will strengthen their early literacy skills and prepare them to enter Kindergarten ready to read. (80%)
- Works with the Youth Services Librarian to coordinate with Library partners to create a Library early literacy outreach schedule.
- Plans, organizes, and presents weekly early literacy reading enrichment activities for children 0 to 5 years old.
- Maintains statistical records of activities and attendance.
- Maintains files in an orderly and efficient manner.
- Supports parents and early childhood educators to interact with their children in ways that will strengthen their early literacy skills and prepares them to enter Kindergarten ready to read. (15%)
- Models best practices for creating enriching reading and playing activities that build early literacy skills.
- Creates and distributes parent early literacy packets providing information about the Great Falls Public Library, Dolly Parton Imagination Library and building early literacy skills.
- Creates and distributes early childhood educator early literacy packets providing information about the Great Falls Public Library, Dolly Parton Imagination Library and building early literacy skills.
- Provides ongoing educational and motivational messages/marketing regarding building early literacy skills for parents and early childhood educators.
- Actively encourages children, parents, and early childhood educators to register for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and to use Library Resources.
- Contributes to making the Great Falls Public Library environment a welcoming and inviting place. (4%)
- Shelves and shifts Library materials as needed.
- Ensures that Library public spaces are organized and stocked appropriately.
- Makes displays.
- Enforces Great Falls Public Library policies (including behavior policies, computer use policies, and materials policies).
- Compiles requested materials, lists, statistics, and related information quickly and accurately.
- Effectively promotes enthusiasm for library services.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, patrons, and the public.
- Participates in the professional development of self and others. Participates in committees and professional organizations as appropriate. (1%)
- Miscellaneous other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of college-level coursework in library science, early childhood education, early literacy, or a related field.
- Two years of experience within a library or early childhood learning setting.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Montana driver’s license.

This position does not supervise other employees.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both out in the community and in the library environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, pinch, grasp, reach, pull and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time; possess hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate a computer, typewriter, microfilm reader, printer, and copier; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read materials.
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
The work schedule is a 29-hour, five-day work week, Sunday through Saturday. Schedule will vary and may include evenings and weekends. This position is a temporary (up to 12 months), non-exempt position and is eligible for overtime, with pre-approval by the Youth Services Librarian or other supervisory staff.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
