VIRGINIA PRESS ASSN is hiring: News Editor – C-VILLE Weekly in Charlottesville

VIRGINIA PRESS ASSN, Charlottesville, VA, United States, 22904

Save Job

Charlottesville’s award-winning weekly paper since 1989, C-VILLE Weekly is seeking an experienced editor to curate its news section. The right candidate will be curious, creative, deadline-driven, and have a vision for the paper’s news section that includes coverage of the city’s major university, as well as development, business, crime, and investigative reporting. The News Editor should be an excellent mentor, with previous roles overseeing staff and freelancers, and have a can-do attitude that he or she is willing to apply to everything from contributing to staff-written feature packages to reloading the printer. This position is based in Charlottesville.

Responsibilities

  1. Developing and maintaining a network of sources.
  2. Overseeing our full-time news reporter, as well as curating and managing a team of news freelancers.
  3. Writing multiple news stories per week, ranging from 50-word briefs to 1,000-word stories.
  4. Researching and writing long-form investigative cover stories (six per year).
  5. Contributing to special issues as needed.
  6. Posting stories online and working with C-VILLE’s editor to handle social media accounts, including covering breaking news.

Qualifications

You should have excellent news judgment (which includes a healthy dose of skepticism about our sometimes navel-gazing city), solid reporting skills, and the ability to write in a smart and occasionally irreverent tone (humor is a plus!). You should be in a loving, committed relationship with deadlines and be able to adhere to a fast-paced weekly news schedule. Our ideal candidate will have experience working with weekly (or daily) newspapers, both ideating and writing stories as well as managing a team of writers.

To apply, send a cover letter or email telling us why you’re the right person for the job, along with your resume and a few clips to editor-in-chief Caite Hamilton at editor@c-ville.com, or follow the link provided.
