The Library Assistant performs paraprofessional work related to circulation and library programming for all ages. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists with maintaining the operation of the circulation desk according to established policies and procedures. Provides circulation services to the public.
- Cash handling and cash register operation.
- Performs all circulation duties related to circulation operations including check-ins, check-outs, renewals, holds requests, payment of fines and fees, registration of patrons, shelving, transit, holds list, shelf reading, and maintaining book drop throughout the day.
- Assists patrons with selecting and locating library materials and library information.
- Provides reader advisory, technology assistance, and reference assistance to patrons.
- Answers incoming calls and assists with inquiries or forwards to appropriate staff as needed.
- Assists with the preparation and implementation of library programs for ages infant to adult.
- Assists with other library duties and special projects as needed.
- Utilizes excellent time management skills to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and responsibilities simultaneously.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Must be available to work in the event of a disaster to assist with recovery response efforts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to provide excellent customer service when working with staff and library patrons.
- Ability to work with the public in a library setting.
- Knowledge of library computer systems and current technology trends.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and library patrons in person and over the telephone.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical and literacy functions.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
- Ability to operate a cash register.
- Ability to perform clerical and manual tasks as prescribed by standard operating procedures with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Knowledge of library policies and procedures.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Two (2) years of customer service experience working with the public in a library setting.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:
- Sufficient eyesight (with or without correction) to perform essential functions
- Sufficient hearing (with or without hearing aid) to perform essential functions
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds
- Required light work that involves walking and standing most of the day.
- Ability and dexterity to accurately enter, access, and retrieve information from a computer
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Works inside a library environment
- Work evenings and weekends as assigned
