Job Title: Assistant News Director

Location: Madison, WI

About this opportunity:

Are you ready to join a newsroom and management team that allows room for growth, innovation, AND a personal life? Do you love the chaos of a newsroom during breaking news but also thrive on special projects and strategy? Do you aspire to one day move into the News Director’s office and drive the strategy yourself? This job is the one you’ve waited for. Our Media Client in Madison is looking for an Assistant News Director to join their experienced team of managers to help lead a team of hungry, creative journalists. You’ll be responsible for setting the daily editorial strategy and working with broadcast and digital producers to execute that strategy across several platforms, including Madison’s most popular news website. In this role, you’ll also help lead an award-winning investigative and special projects team. You will help with budgets, recruit new talent, and coach and train both veteran and emerging journalists while working for a company that values YOUR time away from work.

What you’ll do:

  • Work with producers, anchors, and production team on visual and content execution of broadcasts.
  • Showcase prior experience with a creative eye.
  • Work with News Director on long-term newsroom strategy.
  • Assist News Director with budgets, recruiting, coaching, and special event planning.
  • Collaborate with other station departments on sponsorships and promotions.
  • Directly supervise news reporters and weather anchors.

What you’ll bring:

  • At least five years of experience in a television newsroom.
  • At least two years of management experience.
  • Track record of success in newsroom positions.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Communications, Journalism, or related fields.
  • Desire to lead and coach others.
  • Extremely organized, strategic thinker.
  • Able to direct others on content and strategy.
  • Understanding of target audiences and metrics of success on TV and digital.
  • Clear understanding of journalism rules and laws, as well as journalists’ rights to records and meetings.
  • Outside-the-box ideas and solutions to standard problems.
  • Aspirations beyond the Assistant News Director position.

What They Offer:

  • A dynamic and progressive family-owned business that values their employees, culture, and community.
  • A team of talented and creative professionals.
  • Mentoring and training programs to promote success in your role.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, prescription, life and long-term disability insurance, EAP, flexible spending account, 401(k), and paid time off.

We are an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
