Emergency Communications Radio System Technician
Job Summary:
The Emergency Communications Radio System Technician should be a skilled and experienced LMR technician with a passion for mobile communications and emergency equipment. This role requires knowledge of modern industry trends and advancements in P25 and emergency communication technologies. The position demands a high level of technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work under pressure. The standard work schedule may vary to include holidays, nights and/or weekends.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Strive to do the right thing.

- Install, maintain, program, and repair P25 trunked and conventional repeaters, analog repeaters, dispatch consoles, mobile radios, portable radios, microwave radios, and associated equipment.
- Install, troubleshoot, and repair radio equipment and emergency communication systems for vehicles.
- Program radios to optimize performance and compatibility with various communication networks.
- Troubleshoot and assist in the repair of HVAC, DC power, and generator backup power systems.
- Conduct thorough testing and quality checks on all installations and repairs.
- Provide rotational 24/7 on-call emergency repair services for critical First Responder radio systems and all associated equipment.
- Provide technical support to internal agencies and assist them in resolving issues with their emergency communications systems.
- Stay updated on industry trends and advancements in P25 and emergency communication technologies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Educational Requirements: Associate degree in Electronics Engineering Technology and/or Network Systems.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in IT, radio, or a related field.
- Equivalent work experience in the P25 communication industry or military will be considered.
- Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Familiarity with modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
- Basic electronics knowledge.
- Proven experience in installing emergency equipment into vehicles and configuring two-way radio systems.
- Experience with Motorola Astro P25 systems.
- Strong understanding of RF principles and radio communication technology.
- Proficiency in programming various radio models and brands.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Exceptional communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to travel as required.
- Able to successfully pass a background check.
- Subject to a pre-employment physical, including alcohol and drug screening, and subject to random screenings.
- Must reside within one (1) hour of Botetourt County, VA (Required).
- Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire; must maintain a clean driving record.
Physical Demands/Special Work Environment:
- Routine 8-hour shift during regular business hours is the standard workday.
- Work is performed in an office environment and outdoors at various locations.
- Work may be performed in confined spaces.
- This position is on-call as needed to respond to service-impacting conditions.
- Ability to lift 50–100 lbs. or more.
- Must be able to bend, climb, crawl, and stoop regularly.
- Requires visual and auditory acuity.
- Ability to traverse various types of terrain.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while conducting fieldwork and traveling to fieldwork locations.
- Ability to work with electronic equipment capable of electric shock.
