The University of New Hampshire’s English Department invites applications for a tenure-track position as assistant professor of journalism. The UNH Journalism Program has a rich tradition teaching the craft of nonfiction storytelling, and the successful candidate must hold a master’s degree and have a minimum of five years of professional experience producing deeply reported narrative journalism for the digital age. Expertise in visual or audio storytelling is essential, as is experience in a multi-platform newsroom. UNH is an R1 research university, and the successful candidate is expected to produce robust journalism as a faculty member. Demonstrated teaching ability is required, as responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate courses in news reporting and multimedia storytelling. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to create and teach additional courses that address trends in the field. Such courses would be offered as part of a proposed interdisciplinary major in Journalism and Media Studies. This position, however, is housed entirely within the English Department, which will oversee evaluation, service, and promotion.
Duties/Responsibilities
50% Teaching:
- 4 courses per year in news reporting and multimedia storytelling
- contributions to interdisciplinary courses in journalism and media studies
- creating and teaching new courses that address trends in the field
35% Scholarship:
- active publication of journalism and narrative storytelling
- participation in professional journalism community
- engagement with new developments in the field
15% Service to the Department and the University:
- service on departmental committees
- cooperation in oversight of the journalism program
- service on college and university committees
Requirements
