Post Title & Subject Area: Library Assistant, Learning Centre/E-Resources

Post Duration: Permanent

Grade: Grade IV

Reports to: Assistant Librarian

Location: This position is ordinarily based at the NCAD Campus, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8.

Annual Leave: Annual Leave will be 23 working days. This leave is exclusive of public holidays.

Hours of Attendance: Working hours will be 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday (net of rest breaks).

*Candidates should note that as per Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform guidelines, entry will be at the minimum point of the scale and the rate of remuneration will not be subject to negotiation and may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.

Position Summary

The Edward Murphy Library supports the College’s academic mission through the provision of information, training, facilities and resources for students and staff of the College. The library is of significant national importance for the study and research of art and design, especially relating to the 20th century and contemporary periods. The library houses the largest collection in Ireland of books, exhibition catalogues and magazines on art, design, photography and relevant subjects.

The library collection is international in scope and coverage, informed by sustained bibliographic research. The collection of hard copy material is supplemented by online scholarly resources including indexing databases, e-journals and digital image libraries, available on campus and remotely via Open Athens.

The library is the central hub for scholarly information resources and the primary point of access to knowledge for members of the College community. The library maintains a high profile within the College and is regarded as a neutral space where students are encouraged to explore a very broad range of interests and to develop their research skills.

The work of the Learning Centre is concerned with the discoverability of collections and supporting students to make best use of the full range of library resources. The Library Assistant in the Learning & E-Resources Centre (ERC) supports the work of the Assistant Librarian in the administration of electronic resources and the provision library instruction in support of student research and classroom teaching. This post is an integral part of delivering an excellent service and experience to all Library users.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. To assist in the smooth and efficient running of the Visual Resources Centre;
  2. To develop and catalogue the library’s audio-visual collections;
  3. To assist in developing guides and instructional videos for library resources;
  4. To contribute to engagement initiatives through the delivery of student inductions and library instruction;
  5. To act as library liaison to First Year students;
  6. To maintain a log of student queries and actions;
  7. To provide student support and instruction in the use of the library’s online resources including ARTstor, Jstor, Academic Video Online, Bloomsbury, Material Connexion;
  8. To conduct weekly spot checks for the smooth running of online subscriptions including software updates, broken links, etc.
  9. To support the Assistant Librarian in trialling potential new online resources;
  10. To register and process print journals and claim missing issues through the use of Ebsconet;
  11. To assist in developing and administering the library web pages and contribute to the social media presence to encourage engagement with library collections;
  12. To adhere to all policies and procedures as determined by the College and all Health and Safety regulations.
  13. Undertake any other appropriate duties as may be assigned from time to time by the appropriate Officer within the scope of the role.

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

  1. Minimum NFQ Level 6 or higher qualification in a relevant discipline.
  2. A minimum of three years previous experience in the same or similar role.
  3. Evidence of strong ICT skills and experience of using a wide-range of technologies.
  4. Experience of working in an educational and/or public-facing environment.
  5. Strong presentation skills and a keen interest in working with library users in a learning environment.
  6. A particular knowledge of and interest in contemporary visual arts and moving image history.
  7. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to operate flexibly as a member of a team and independently.
  8. Ability to manage and prioritise a busy workload and work to deadlines.
  9. Familiarity with the application of Marc 21 and various metadata schema.
  10. Experience of maintaining Electronic Resources in a library setting.
  11. Understanding of web functionality.
  12. Familiarity with research methods.
  13. Familiarity with issues regarding copyright and citation.
  14. Demonstrable knowledge of scanning technologies, digital imaging software and file-naming conventions.
