The Chesapeake Public Library ( CPL ) seeks an outgoing, energetic and enthusiastic full-time Librarian to manage and supervise the Youth and Family Services ( YFS ) Department of the Indian River Library.
CPL promotes a work environment that values civility, cordiality and the unique contributions of each individual staff member. CPL is an evolving and vibrant organization and is instrumental in providing high quality public education and creating the foundation for lifelong learning and strong community.
The Librarian serves as a member of the library's management team and represents the YFS Department in all library system initiatives.
Responsibilities of the Librarian include:
- Managing the Youth and Family Services department which includes hiring and evaluating employees, creating and providing literacy
- STEM / STEAM programming to include delivering high quality programming to schools and community locations
- Assisting and instructing customers in finding print and electronic materials, providing homework and research support, providing computer assistance,
- Promoting CPL services and programs using approved social media and publicity tools
- Supervising volunteers, maintaining the branch children's and teen's collections
- Participating in CPL system-wide committees.
Will assist in other public service areas when needed.

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement:
Librarian I: Must be currently enrolled in a masters level Library Science degree program and must obtain a master's degree in Library Science within 12 months of hire from a school accredited by the American Library Association
Librarian II: Requires an American Library Association accredited master's degree in libraryLibrarian III : Requires an American Library Association accredited master's degree in library science.
Experience:
Librarian I: None
Librarian II: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time public library experience, including 1-year supervisory experience. Librarian III : In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time public library experience including two years of supervisory experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Librarian I - III : Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Librarion I: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months after obtaining a master's degree in library science.
Librarian II: Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.Librarian III : Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.
