Job Description:
The Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking an outgoing, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented full-time Library Assistant II, who has a passion for public service, exemplary customer service, and organizational skills to perform library/clerical work at any public service desk (Circulation, Adult Services, or Youth and Family Services) but primarily in youth and family services, in a busy area library.
This position requires exemplary customer service skills and a commitment to outstanding service.
- Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) has a well-established Youth and Family Services (YFS) department with a dynamic track record of providing quality services for children, young adults, and teens. We are looking for someone to help us deliver new and innovative programs and events in our Russell Memorial Library Youth and Family Services Department.
- Responsibilities include planning and delivering literacy and STEM / STEAM programming; finding print and electronic materials; providing homework help, research support, and computer assistance; delivering high-quality programming to schools and community outreaches; and participating in CPL system-wide committees.
Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires one year of college in liberal arts or library science or any equivalent combination of education and customer service experience.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of six months related, full-time equivalent library or customer service experience. Six months public library experience preferred.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Depending on department, requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with the City Driving Standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with automated circulation systems highly desired.
Public library experience preferred but other library, children’s literature, child development, and STEM / STEAM experience also will be considered.
Preferred qualifications related to job description:
- Experience working with unsupervised children, tweens, and teens.
- Experience mentoring and/or leading tweens and/or teens.
- Experience or interest in developing programs and activities for teens.
- Knowledge of popular or current teen literature.
