Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Supervising Reference Librarian for the Northside Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other.
The preferred starting salary for this position is $21.03 hourly ($43,742.40 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. This position is responsible for supervising Reference Services at the Northside library and upholding a strong public service orientation. The individual in this role should have a solid understanding of library practices, knowledge of reference resources (including online databases and other internet resources), and familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Providing reader's advisory and reference services.
- Assisting patrons of all ages with the use of library resources and equipment.
- Performing some circulation tasks and general library duties.
- Assisting with administrative tasks.
- May serve as the acting branch manager.

Essential Duties:- Manages the department including scheduling, monitoring staff duties, attending meetings, and preparing paperwork.
- Performs direct customer service to public by staffing reference desk, conducting reference interviews and internet searches, and locating items in various formats.
- Supervises, coaches, trains, motivates, and evaluates the performance of staff and volunteers; interviews, selects, assigns work, and administers disciplinary action to subordinate employees in accordance with established personnel policy and procedures. Establishes professional standards for work quality, quantity, performance, and accountability.
- Provides reader's advisory, reference services, and technology assistance to the public and patrons of all ages.
- Coordinates with staff to oversee adult library programs (virtual, in-person, and hybrid) to meet the needs of a diverse community and establish positive rapport with local non-profits and organizations; includes outreach activities, scheduling, negotiating payment if applicable, promotion of programs, and set-up/take-down.
- Creates flyers, program brochures, bookmarks, and digital graphics to promote library resources and programming.
- Answers reader's advisory and other patron questions via phone, email, or in person; prepares teacher loans and patron subject requests as assigned.
- Implements library policies and procedures associated with public services such as the Internet, meeting rooms, displays, food and cell phone use, etc.
- Maintains the collection including noticing gaps and outdated materials, participating in weeding, and planning for space needs and collection arrangement. Assists in selecting materials for the local collection.
- Assists patrons using computers and other library technology and provides technology tutorials.
- Performs some general department and/or branch duties; may assist with some circulation tasks.
- Supervises set up, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance of reference computers including software and printers.
- Trains staff and public in using electronic resources including conducting workshops, preparing handouts, brochures, and other instructional materials.
- Serves as acting branch manager in their absence.
- Serves on system-wide committees.
- Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
- Eligibility for professional certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia within the first 2 years of employment AND 2 years of previous library experience, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite and online reference resources.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
- 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of library practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of reference resources (including online databases and other internet resources), and familiarity with Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Familiarity with automated library systems.
- Knowledge of general reference sources and a willingness to read a variety of age-appropriate books to enhance reader’s advisory skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to use library's print and electronic resources.
- Knowledge of JMRL and national OCLC policies and procedures associated with ILL.
- Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, technical journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
- Intermediate: Ability to organize data and write clear and concise reports, business letters, explanations, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Basic: Ability to perform the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
- Intermediate: Ability to develop effective working relationships with library staff, managers, volunteers, and the public. Provide and receive complex information. May include interactions that involve stressful, negative situations requiring significant tact and the ability to diffuse aggressive behavior and reach consensus. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation, understanding, and acceptance of ideas.
- Requires Limited Direction: Normally completes work according to their own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance occasionally. Manages special projects with little oversight and assignments may be reviewed upon completion. Performance reviewed periodically.
- Skilled: Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities. Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office applications and/or departmental software.
- May receive and disburse funds and prepare money for deposit. May be responsible for planning and tracking a programming budget under the supervision of the Branch Manager or Adult Programming and Reference Services Manager.
- Supervises and monitors performance for a regular group of employees or department. Provides input on hiring, discipline, work objectives/goals, performance evaluation and work assignments.
