Jefferson-Madison Regional Library is seeking candidates to be considered for the position of Support Staff Supervisor for the Central Library who are highly motivated and who support JMRL's Mission Statement to foster personal growth and life-long learning for all by connecting people with ideas, information, and each other.
The preferred starting salary for this position is $18.07 hourly ($37,585.60 annually). Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience and internal equity. This position performs paraprofessional and supervisory work in the Central Library's Reference Department, providing general reference services on the public services desk and overseeing the work of support staff. Work is performed under the limited direction of the Supervising Reference Librarian or Adult Programming and Reference Services Manager.
Duties may vary based on assigned branch:- Provides general reference services to patrons at a public service desk.
- Supervises, coaches, trains, motivates, and evaluates the performance of staff and volunteers; interviews, selects, assigns work, and administers disciplinary action to subordinate employees in accordance with established personnel policy and procedures. Establishes professional standards for work quality, quantity, performance, and accountability.
- Assists in collection management, evaluating materials for condition, timeliness, usage, etc., making recommendations for items to be removed as needed.
- May manage and process interlibrary loans (ILL) for locations across JMRL. May maintain procedures manual and train ILL staff at other branches. Collects and reports monthly statistics.
- May plan, promote and conduct high quality library programming.
- Assists patrons using computers and other library technology and provides technology tutorials.
- Answers patrons’ questions and makes Readers Advisory recommendations.
- Oversees checking in and distribution of mail.
- Oversees processing and maintenance of periodicals and newspapers.
- Works a flexible schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends.
- May fill in at multiple service desks as needed.
- May occasionally serve as department/branch manager in their absence or as needed.
- Responsible for appropriate use and maintenance of JMRL equipment, tools, and other resources, including work time.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as apparent or assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree and supervisory experience, including evaluating, hiring, disciplining, and scheduling.
- Associate’s degree and 2 years of supervisory experience, including evaluating, hiring, disciplining, and scheduling.
- High School diploma or GED, and 4 years of supervisory experience, including evaluating, hiring, disciplining, and scheduling.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above.
- Knowledge of library practices, particularly shelving.
- Previous library experience.
- Required to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
- Knowledge of computer applications and Internet searching skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to use library's print, electronic resources, and other library equipment.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow library policies and procedures associated with public services.
- Intermediate: Ability to read and understand written materials such as newspapers, technical journals, multi-step instruction manuals, and reference materials.
- Intermediate: Ability to write reports, prepare materials such as business letters, explanations, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
- Intermediate: Ability to work with and understand number systems; simple formulas, practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, and measurement.
- Intermediate: Provide and receive complex information. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with JMRL staff, leaders, and the public.
- Requires Limited Direction: Normally completes work according to their own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance occasionally.
- Skilled: Comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities.
