GENERAL PURPOSE: Coordinates and performs a variety of professional librarian functions in support of Haltom City Public Library operations; participates in collection development and maintenance activities relating to youth services; provides reference services, readers' advisory and technical assistance to patrons; delivers library programming for children; and performs other related duties as assigned.


PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.


  • Provides customer assistance and reference services to library patrons; responds to patron research inquiries in person, electronically, and via telephone.
  • Trains patrons in the use of library computers, equipment, technology, and research methods.
  • Evaluates and participates in the development and maintenance of the Library's collections for youth services; selects and orders print, audio, and digital materials; assesses donations for addition to the collection.
  • Plans, develops, promotes, and delivers library programming for children; coordinates programming activities with outside agencies as required.
  • Develops resource brochures, marketing materials, and policies and procedures relating to assigned area.
  • Serves as the Volunteer Coordinator; supervises and coordinates volunteer work activities; assigns work duties and monitors the quality of work performed.
  • Performs proctoring duties; administers exams for distance learning, school admission, and certification programs as required.
  • Attends professional meetings and represents the Library at community events as required.
  • Serves as Librarian in Charge in the absence of the Library Services Director.
  • Participates in the planning of library services, preparation of budgets, and/or hiring and supervision of assigned library personnel.
  • Compiles statistical data and prepares and maintains a variety of departmental reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education and Experience:

Master's Degree in Library Science, and three years experience in a public library environment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of library science.
  • Library operations, services, policies, and procedures.
  • Circulation, reference, and acquisitions principles and practices.
  • Principles and practices of cataloging and collection maintenance.
  • Library equipment, materials, and technology.
  • Customer service standards and protocol.
  • Basic supervisory principles and practices.

Required Skill in:

  • Coordinating and performing a variety of professional librarian functions.
  • Assisting in ensuring the delivery of high quality library services to patrons.
  • Responding to inquiries and providing customer service to the public.
  • Evaluating, developing, and maintaining library collections.
  • Developing, promoting, and delivering library programming.
  • Performing specialized duties relative to area of assignment.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a library environment and involves regular contact with the public.
  • Subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching; must be able to lift and carry library materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
