Charlesbridge, an independent publisher, seeks a creative, organized, energetic Temporary Design Assistant to join the Design Department for a period of approx. 3-6 months. This is a part-time (14 hours per week), non-benefitted position to be paid at a rate of $25/hour. Candidate must be available to work on-site at our office located in Watertown, Massachusetts.
Job Description
The Temporary Design Assistant supports the needs of the Creative Director and design staff in a fast-paced team environment. Administrative skills, organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task are highly important. The successful candidate will learn the fundamentals of book publishing by assisting with all aspects of book design and production.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Creates marketing materials as needed for designers.
- Maintains files: book files, artist portfolio files, book-specific photo/art files for designers (e.g. using Excel to create databases).
- Scans and places art into InDesign layouts, as needed by designers.
- Inputs proofreading text corrections.
- Maintains the promotional support materials schedule.
- Potentially: Coordinates and designs new editions and paperbacks.
- Support a variety of other small business needs as they arise.
Qualifications
- Experience in graphic design or publishing.
- Must have extensive experience in the MAC environment, with Adobe Suite (InDesign and Photoshop) and Microsoft Office skills.
- Works collaboratively with others in a team environment; takes ownership of, and pride in, work product.
- Works well under deadline pressure; able to multi-task and take initiative to see/do what needs to be done.
- Helpful: a demonstrated strong design aesthetic via a portfolio.
