The Senior Technical Writer is responsible for creating and revising complex technical documentation to support the marketing, operation, repair, and maintenance of company products. This position requires ensuring all documents conform to company and government standards, specifications, and language usage principles. The Senior Technical Writer will work with cutting-edge publishing software to produce product descriptions, functional descriptions, operating procedures, fault isolation instructions, maintenance and repair procedures, illustrated parts breakdowns (IPB), reports, proposals, marketing literature, and other technical documentation. Additionally, this role will involve collaborating with engineering teams to ensure accuracy, clarity, and comprehensiveness of technical content.
Key Responsibilities:
- Create and revise detailed technical documentation, including product descriptions, functional descriptions, operating procedures, fault isolation, maintenance and repair instructions, IPB, reports, and proposals.
- Ensure that all documents comply with customer requirements, government specifications, engineering standards, and language usage principles.
- Collaborate with engineering staff to research and gather information on systems and equipment for the creation and revision of technical documents.
- Analyze and interpret engineering drawings and other technical data to translate complex concepts into clear, understandable documentation.
- Evaluate and integrate illustrations and graphics, ensuring their effective use in technical documentation. Request the creation or revision of illustrations as necessary.
- Assist in evaluating project requirements by providing time and cost estimates for technical writing assignments.
- Interface with customers on project content and technical issues, addressing customer questions and concerns related to company equipment and systems.
- Participate in reviews and validation efforts for technical documentation (both onsite and offsite).
- Provide input on the design and formatting of technical documentation, contributing to overall project direction.
- Lead small projects or sections of large technical writing assignments.
- Perform or participate in unit/system testing for Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs).
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and relevant applications in technical writing.
- Ensure a safe work environment and compliance with safety objectives and policies.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 5 years of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and system operations to effectively create technical documentation.
- Proficiency with state-of-the-art publication/page production software and Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) development processes.
- Strong ability to understand and analyze complex engineering designs and translate them into clear, concise language for non-engineers.
- Ability to create and revise complex technical documentation within deadlines and budgets, while engaging in problem-solving discussions with cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency in XML authoring tools (e.g., Arbortext Epic Editor, Oxygen software).
- Expertise in MS Office Tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat Professional (or similar PDF markup tool).
- Experience with Mechanical/Electrical/Operator technical writing, preferably in the defense industry.
- Strong customer interaction and customer service skills, including direct customer interface in some positions.
- Familiarity with Interactive Electronic Technical Manual functionality, development processes, and markup languages.
- Ability to work with diverse teams across various physical locations and coordinate technical documentation efforts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the defense industry.
- Validation/Verification, and on-vehicle experience are a plus.
- Content Management System (CMS) experience is a plus.
- Knowledge of relevant military and commercial standards.
- Specialized technical knowledge may be required for certain positions.
Education:
- Required: Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 5 additional years of relevant experience.
- Preferred: Experience in the defense industry is highly desired.
