The Technical Writer II is responsible for creating and revising complex technical documentation to support the marketing, operation, repair, and maintenance of company products. The role involves ensuring that all documentation conforms to company, customer, and government standards, as well as language usage principles. This position requires expertise in technical writing for product descriptions, functional descriptions, operating procedures, fault isolation, maintenance and repair procedures, illustrated parts breakdowns (IPB), and other technical documents. The writer will also research and consult with engineering staff, analyze technical data, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accuracy and clarity in the documentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Create and revise technical documentation for various company products, including functional descriptions, operating procedures, fault isolation, maintenance, repair procedures, and illustrated parts breakdowns (IPB).
  2. Ensure all documents comply with customer requirements, government specifications, engineering standards, and language usage principles.
  3. Collaborate with engineering staff to understand systems and equipment for the creation of technical documents.
  4. Analyze and interpret engineering drawings and technical data to produce clear, understandable documentation for non-engineers.
  5. Evaluate illustrations and graphics to determine their best use within technical documents, requesting new or revised illustrations as needed.
  6. Assist project writers in validating written procedures and participate in evaluating project requirements, including providing input into time and cost estimates.
  7. Contribute to the design and layout of technical documentation by offering input on format and style.
  8. Stay up-to-date on industry trends, best practices, and relevant applications in technical writing and documentation.
  9. Maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with safety objectives and policies.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 2 years of relevant technical writing experience.
  2. Proficient in technical writing for hydraulics, mechanics, electronics, and system operations.
  3. Experience with XML authoring tools (e.g., Arbortext Epic Editor, Oxygen Software).
  4. Proficient with MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint required; Access a plus).
  5. Proficient with Adobe Acrobat Professional PDF software for illustration markups (or similar PDF markup tool).
  6. Ability to understand engineering designs and translate them into clear, concise documentation.
  7. Strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and command of the English language.
  8. Experience in creating and managing technical documentation of limited scope and complexity, ensuring documents are delivered on time.
  9. Strong customer service skills, with experience in direct customer interface (some positions may require customer interaction).
  10. Ability to work with diverse teams across various locations and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in the defense or automotive industries.
  2. Familiarity with interactive electronic technical manuals (IETM) and markup languages.
  3. Content Management System (CMS) experience.
  4. Understanding of relevant military and commercial standards.
  5. Validation/Verification, on-vehicle experience is a plus.

Education:

  1. Required: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, plus 2 additional years of relevant experience.
  2. Preferred: Relevant industry-specific experience, particularly in defense or automotive fields.
