Position Summary The NYU Tandon School of Engineering (TSoE) MakerSpace is seeking a MakerSpace Design Specialist to support and develop project-based learning opportunities. NYU-TSoE is planning to enhance the experiential learning component across all disciplines of engineering, and the MakerSpace is expected to play a pivotal role in realizing these opportunities. This position will report to the Manager and assist in the growth of design thinking and design process learning. They will develop new workshops, lead Design Lab programming, and work 11AM – 7PM in the MakerSpace. This position will also coordinate outreach events such as hackathons and work closely with the Manager to assess extracurricular learning and peer-led instruction in the space.

The MakerSpace Design Specialist will oversee and develop industry partnerships with tech and engineering companies around the region. This position will assist the Manager in investigating potential funding opportunities for student projects and materials and lead the promotion of all Design Lab activities. Responsibilities include: Development, supervision, and evaluation of all elements of Design Lab programming. Serving as design and prototyping mentor, generating resources and content for student projects. Managing events including workshops, hackathons, and student project showcases. Managing graduate student teaching assistants and promoting the Design Lab. The successful candidate will have experience in supervising students and working within an academic environment. They will have experience with design thinking and the design process, including ideation, prototyping, and user testing/evaluation. The position requires a highly motivated, energetic candidate with attention to detail. About the NYU Tandon MakerSpace:

The NYU Tandon MakerSpace is a cutting-edge lab created to foster collaborative design projects. The space is open to all NYU students, staff, and faculty. It features rapid prototyping and PCB production equipment, as well as advanced machining and testing capabilities. The MakerSpace was designed to support and encourage project-based learning at all levels and provides training and workshops on machine usage, prototyping skills, and design. Usage of the MakerSpace equipment has been integrated into the curriculum of several departments throughout the Tandon School of Engineering. It serves as a tech hub connecting NYU students to the broader NYC tech community, the NYU Future Labs, and local incubators and startups. The space also supports the local community by hosting many courses and design projects from the Center for K12 STEM Education. The Design Lab serves as the MakerSpace programming arm. It provides NYU students with workshops and learning opportunities to ideate, experiment, prototype, and build their ideas. It cultivates collaboration, nurtures students' creative confidence, encourages collaboration, and connects them with other parts of the NYU Innovation and Entrepreneurship ecosystem. The Design Lab at NYU Tandon MakerSpace fosters a community of creative technologists, critical thinkers, and social innovators. With the creation of the Design Lab @ NYU Tandon MakerSpace in Fall 2018, there has been a large growth of extracurricular learning, with over 30 workshops in the past semester. Qualifications

Required Education:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, design, or closely related field. Preferred Education:

Master’s degree in engineering, computer science, education, or related field. Required Experience:

2-4 years. Preferred Experience:

Experience working in a makerspace, innovation lab, or other design-focused workspace. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Design software such as Adobe CC; experience with light prototyping tools and materials; programming experience; web development and WordPress; design thinking; project management experience; teaching or mentoring experience. Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
