The Position: We seek a motivated and creative member of our arts team, who understands how young people learn, to teach an appreciation and understanding of music primarily through song and the playing of instruments. The Teacher, in collaboration with the arts team and grade level teaching teams, plans and executes developmentally appropriate lessons that meet the needs of Glen Urquhart School students as they prepare for performances.

Key Responsibilities: As an independent day school, we expect teachers to become involved in the life of the school. Beyond classroom work, teachers attend weekly school meetings, school functions, and community events. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the mission and philosophy of the school
  • Develop and support a curriculum that provides a balanced approach to music education, including singing, playing instrumental music, creative movement, and performance
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters respect, collaboration, and self-expression
  • Planning lessons that are interdisciplinary and thematic
  • Working collaboratively with grade level teams
  • Work with the Art Department to plan, rehearse, and direct student performances
  • Keeping accurate and up-to-date records on student progress
  • Meeting with the administrators as scheduled

  • A minimum of one year of elementary or middle school classroom experience or equivalent
  • Familiarity with the developmental needs of elementary-age students and current theories and practices that support a dynamic elementary education program
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, pedagogy, and performance
  • A belief in differentiated and developmentally-aligned models of teaching and learning
  • An understanding of the social emotional needs of students
