Job Summary/Description:

The producer is one of the most crucial positions at a television station. The position requires someone who is a strong leader, an excellent communicator, organized, and passionate about the news.

WDBJ7 is focused on training and growing producers who have an interest in not only putting together incredible newscasts but also working toward a goal of either entering management or working in a big-time market.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Prioritize, organize, and produce newscasts
  2. Maintain working knowledge of current events, community issues, and local contacts
  3. Search wire services, network feeds, websites, and other sources to find relevant material for newscasts
  4. Work with news management to determine which stories to air during newscasts
  5. Coordinate story assignments with news management
  6. Collaborate with operations staff to build graphics
  7. Act as a leader in facilitating teamwork among staff members
  8. Accurately edit video with an eye for visual elements that make stories understandable to the viewer
  9. Work with directors and anchors on the presentation of stories
  10. Monitor competition’s shows and websites for missed leads
  11. Assist producers in formatting other newscasts
  12. Assist reporters with story development, story expectations, and accurately gathering information under pressure
  13. Write creative headlines and teases
  14. Research and brainstorm story ideas, and present ideas in editorial meetings
  15. Generate promotable story ideas daily
  16. Post and update stories and videos to station website and social media sites, engage viewers
  17. Work with the web staff during breaking news and alert users on all platforms
  18. Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  1. 1-3 years of producing experience in broadcast news with a Bachelor’s degree
  2. Clear, concise, and conversational writing skills
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. Demonstrate solid news judgment
  5. Strong initiative and attention to detail
  6. Be creative and create compelling and memorable newscasts
  7. Knowledge of newsroom software and web posting software
  8. Edit video and audio on industry-standard equipment
  9. Build graphics and use them effectively in shows
  10. Handle and adjust to last-minute changes
  11. Make quick, accurate decisions and work well under pressure
  12. Strong research skills, including online research using various search engines
  13. Ability to stay current with national and local news/weather
  14. Intermediate level knowledge of social media
  15. Ability to meet tight deadlines and work well under pressure
  16. Ability to work independently with little supervision
  17. Demonstrate leadership through training and mentoring less experienced staff members; guide others to get the desired outcome
  18. Ability to remain positive and foster a positive work environment; work well with co-workers
