Position Summary: Under close supervision, performs a variety of duties supporting the circulation of library materials for the City of Canon City Public Library.

  • Performs a variety of basic support duties for the Canon City Public Library, including assisting patrons find materials, checking materials in/out, and assisting in the processing and cleaning of materials.
  • Performs shelving and book/materials collection maintenance.
  • Keeps collections organized and in proper order.
  • Provides excellent customer service to external and internal customers including but not limited to effectively listening and communicating, providing accurate information, offering solutions, assisting in resolution, and ensuring timely follow up as needed.

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities*: The following duties, although not essential to the position, are important components to the smooth and efficient operation of the Division, Department, and City.
  • Performs a variety of library support tasks, such as processing new books, operating cash register, making signs & other promotional materials.
  • Attends and participates in professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees, and attends and participates in staff meeting discussions.

  • Knowledge of policy and procedures relevant to the City of Canon City Public Library.
  • Knowledge of computerized library resources and cataloging systems.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to build effective relationships as needed with employees, government officials, contractors, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to assist library patrons with a variety of needs, such as finding and/or reserving books/materials, using computers and copiers, one on one tutoring with library patrons on the use of library technology, and assisting library patrons with the operation of Makerspace equipment.
  • Ability to perform a variety of library support tasks, such as processing new or donated books/materials, cleaning and repairing materials, preparing bank deposits, operating cash register, making signs, or processing and labeling of library materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Familiar with basic computer functions. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software. Knowledge of basic office equipment including but not limited to copiers, fax machines, multi-line phone systems, and adding machines.
  • Skilled in the practices and methods of cash handling and deposit preparation.
  • Ability to interact with patrons from various demographic groups.


Requirements

Minimum Qualification(s):

Experience
  • At least one (1) year of experience in a position requiring direct contact with the public.
  • At least one (1) year of experience filing/cataloging materials based on numerical or alphabetical identifiers.
  • At least six (6) months of cash handling N/A.

Education
  • High School Diploma, or equivalent.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Have a valid Colorado Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one within sixty (60) days of employment, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Canon City.

Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the listed knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.

Preferred Qualification(s):

Experience
  • Previous experience working in a library setting.
  • Previous experience in book/material collection maintenance.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Library Support Staff Certification (LSSC)

Physical Activities:
  • This position works in an office setting with occasional local travel.
  • Physical demands of job require some lifting; pulling; carrying and pushing of objects -approximately 15 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, simple grasping, finger/manual dexterity, standing, walking, twisting upper body, stooping, and hearing.
  • Occasional climbing on stairs.
  • Communicates verbally with City staff, outside agencies and the public in one-on-one settings, group settings and over the telephone.

Additional Information:
  • This position will typically work Monday - Saturday but will flex to evenings based on seasonal, organizational or event needs.
  • This position may be required to attend meetings and other events after normal work hours.
  • Travel within the City of Canon City, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Denver areas may be required for specialized training.
