Job Description: Upper School Literature Teacher (7th-12th grade)

Job Title: Upper School Teacher

Location: Ascent Classical Academy of Douglas County (ACADC), Lone Tree CO

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: Dean of Upper School

Work Hours/Days: Monday through Friday, Typical School day 7:00 am-3:35 pm, professional development and workdays

Start Date: August 2025*

*Please note all teachers will need to be able to attend training in Hillsdale, MI, for up to 10 days in June. ACACS and Hillsdale cover travel to the conference, lodging, and food.

Annual salary is distributed evenly through 12 months

Employer pays employees monthly premium, 401K with match available

Essential Functions:

  • Teaching courses in middle- and high-school literature, including classical, British, American, and modern literature
  • Cultivating virtue through instruction, mentorship, and programming
  • Participating in Upper School House System as faculty mentor
  • Maintaining professionalism in conduct and communication, striving to exemplify our core virtuesPrepare unit and lesson plans for all courses in alignment with Hillsdale College's K12 Program Guide for each school year
  • Teach and mentor students, utilizing classical pedagogy methods
  • Assign, collect, grade, and return graded work in a timely manner
  • Continuously monitor student progress and self-evaluate how best to support effective student learning
  • Proactively identify struggling or advanced students to provide additional support or academic extensions
  • Collaborate with Students Services team to meet requirements of special educational plans, such as IEPs, 504s, and others
  • Communicate regularly, usually weekly, with parents
  • Assist in daily operations of the school (e.g., taking attendance, supervising student arrivals, passing periods in hallways, lunchtime and recess supervision) on a shared schedule
  • Participate in professional development as offered by ACADC and Hillsdale College's K12 Office
  • Maintain confidentiality in student records
  • Maintains a collegial, professional relationship with students, parents, and colleagues as a partner in the community of learners
  • Demonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours, reporting on time, and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness to ensure minimal disruption to students, colleagues, and school operations
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree amd passing score on the State Praxis in the subject area required
    • Teachers with a bachelor's degree in the subject taught are preferred, or at a minimum 36 hours of higher education credit in the subject area of instruction. (In some cases, a passing grade in a content exam will suffice.)
    • Teaching License not required
  • Strong background in relevant content areas with a willingness to receive specific training

  • Conviction in the values of a rigorous liberal arts education
  • Commitment to model moral character in line with the school's core virtues
  • Adherence to all ACACS policies, including but not limited to the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and applicable school and board policies
  • Proficiency in English verbal and written
  • Proficiency in a variety of teaching strategies and techniques to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate information and issues
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire students to achieve their personal best
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment with superior organization and computer skills
  • Ability to develop positive and professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and team members
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism
  • Creative problem-solving skills and adaptability to challenges
  • Patience, reliability, and a positive attitude

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Must be able to traverse classroom and school building
  • Must be able to monitor indoor and outdoor activities
