The City of Torrance is recruiting for a Cable TV Assistant Producer/Writer to be part of theCommunications Division!
The Division
The City of Torrance Communications Division encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including managing social media platforms, maintaining the City website, providing audio-visual services, overseeing CitiCABLEprogramming, and coordinating public outreach and marketing initiatives. The division also drives public engagement efforts, and provides event coverage to ensure clear and timely communication with the community.

The Position
The City of Torrance is seeking a full-time, experienced Television Producer for Torrance CitiCABLE, the City's award-winning government access cable television channel. The successful candidate will possess exceptional news writing and producing skills, an engaging on-camera presence, and the ability to create and produce live newscasts, weekly news magazine programs, and a variety of other content, including documentaries, feature stories, news segments, and promotional material for City departments and initiatives. Candidates should be social media savvy with experience creating and producing live remote social media stories. Candidates may work weekends, holiday's, and adjusted shifts.

As a community liaison and representative of the channel, this position will be tasked with interacting with various members of the community including residents, City staff, and elected officials. The most success candidate will have experience not only on camera, but off camera as well, as this position requires a substantial amount of sourcing, writing, and producing.

QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education and Experience
Two years of college coursework in journalism, technical or non-fiction writing, television production, or a related field; and six months of experience in commercial, non-commercial, educational, or governmental script writing and producing.

License and Certification
A valid California Class C driver's license.

Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • A degree in Broadcast Journalism;
  • Experience in all areas of television production such as coordinating shoots, writing
    scripts, and hosting regularly scheduled programs;
  • Self-motivation and ability to source news stories;
  • Experience reading from a teleprompter;
  • Experience ad-libbing on-camera on a wide range of topics;
  • Understanding of sourcing, developing, and presenting public information;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact with news;
  • Knowledge of subjects, audiences, City staff, officials, and local dignitaries.

Educational Incentive Program (Sec. 3.3)
Building Inspection Supervisors: 4% of base pay for ICC certificate in one of the certified areas. (Additional 2% for each additional certificate, up to max of 12%).
Failure to maintain certification results in loss of 2% for each year's delay of recertification.
Disability Insurance (sec. 4.1)
Employee receives 2/3 base pay after elimination period (14 consecutive days for STD and 180 consecutive days for LTD)

5% over base pay when ½ or more of the shift is worked after 4:00 p.m.
