Under general supervision of the Technical Services Manager, assists in providing administrative, technical, and customer assistance to Librarians and Library patrons.

The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties in this description and incumbent(s) may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this description.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Assists Library patrons at circulation desk with book returns and checkouts, payment of fines, and completing Library card application and hold request forms.
  2. Collects payments for Library book sales.
  3. Empties book drop and book collection areas, returns books to available status using catalogue system, and shelves Library materials according to established procedures.
  4. Inspects returned books for damage and makes minor repairs to book covers, spines, and labels.
  5. Organizes books into their Dewey number and files them properly.
  6. Processes new and donated books by bar-coding, stamping, dating, laminating, covering, typing, and affixing spine labels.
  7. Repairs, cleans, and evaluates condition of books and removes damaged books and materials from general circulation.
  8. Assists with mailing overdue notices.
  9. Maintains the order and cleanliness of Library areas and holdings.
  10. Prepares order for replenishing library office supplies and submits them to the Technical Services and Library Finance Administrator.
  11. Receives library materials.
  12. Sorts donated books for Collection Development staff to view and to include in the Annual Book Sale.
  13. Opens and prepares Library common areas, computers, office equipment, and other search tools.
  14. Logs into database statistics of patrons, reference questions, and Library usage statistics.
  15. Receives and logs interlibrary loans, notifies patrons of arrivals of requested materials.
  16. Counts monies received for damaged books, overdue fines, and copy charges, and completes revenue deposit forms.
  17. Logs incoming mail, sorts and distributes to appropriate personnel, and delivers outgoing mail to City Hall for postage and post office for delivery.

Other Important Duties:

  1. Travels to City Hall, Post Office, and to attend meetings, conferences, and training.
  2. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  3. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Knowledge of library shelving procedures.
  2. Knowledge of customer service methods and techniques.
  3. Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  4. Skill in assisting with circulation desk activities including shelving and retrieving books.
  5. Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  6. Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
  7. Skill in sorting, evaluating, and repairing library books, materials, and equipment.
  8. Skill in database entry, retrieval, and research.
  9. Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
  10. Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software.

Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D., and six (6) months clerical experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen, MVR and background check and/or post-offer physical agility exam.
  3. Must possess valid State of Texas Driver's License.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  1. Work is performed in a public library environment.
  2. May be subject to repetitive motion such as typing, data entry, and vision to monitor.
  3. May be subject to frequent bending to floor level, reaching, kneeling, and lifting such as retrieving or replacing books and materials.
  4. Must be able to reach up to 7' using a stepping stool.
  5. May be subject to working extended hours, nights, and weekends.
  6. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and push up to 75 pounds.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:

  1. Equipment utilized includes personal computer, copier, calculator, fax machine, cash register, other standard office equipment, and personal or department vehicles.
