The principal duty of all employees is to assist in the mission of the Church in the Diocese of Fort Worth. General Position Summary: The Director of Music oversees all music. This individual should be an experienced choral director and experienced pianist/accompanist and should possess the ability to communicate with and manage volunteers.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Report directly to the pastor and responsible for arranging all liturgy and music associated with worship within the parish: weekend and holy days masses; sacramental celebrations of Confirmation, Reconciliation and First Communion; Triduum; devotions such as Stations of the Cross, civic holidays such as Thanksgiving; parish retreats.
  • Direct the adult choir at all masses and major feasts during calendar year.
  • Recruit, train, rehearse and evaluate choir members, cantors and musicians for which the Director provides direct leadership.
  • Arrange for additional musicians for special celebrations such as Easter and Christmas.
  • Accompanist for Weddings
  • Supervise musical resource and sound system to include their purchase, maintenance and distribution.
  • Arrange, transpose and/or compose music as needed or required.
  • Maintain the level of knowledge and skills required for the position.
  • Participate in diocesan-sponsored training, attend workshops, conferences and classes.
  • Provide encouragement, evaluation and appreciation to musicians.
  • Obtain and maintain compliance with copyright laws and requirements on behalf of all parish ministries.
  • Attend monthly liturgy meetings
  • Review the prepared budget for music and provide necessary input and advocacy in the parish budgeting process.


Supervision Given and/or Received:

  • Received: moderate supervision given to this position from Parish Pastor, Business Manager
  • Given: this position provides feedback to the choir and volunteers during events and practices

Internal Contacts:

  • Diocese Pastors, Priests, Business Managers, and employees

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

  • This position works in a typical Church environment but is subject to stress due to the evolving tight deadlines during the liturgical seasons
  • Ability to sit and perform computer work for lengthy periods of time.
  • Able to access and maintain centralized departmental files. Involves extending arms and reaching files stored in multiple levels on shelves, climbing up a stepladder to access files.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance and up to 60 pounds with assistance
  • Ability to accept work interruptions while remaining focused on duties.
  • Data entry via computer keyboard requires repetitive and frequent hand and wrist movements.
  • Must have knowledge to be able to set up and operate sound equipment
  • Required to work some nights and all weekends

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Must be a fully initiated Catholic actively participating in the liturgical life of the Church.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music.
  • Considerable instrumental, vocal and directing skills.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Roman Catholic Liturgy.

Knowledge and Skills Preferred:

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing
  • Knowledge of the Catholic Church, Catholic sacraments, Catholic rites, and liturgies
  • Familiarity and experience with computers, computer programs and office equipment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to compose correspondence and announcements
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work effectively
  • Bilingual: English/Spanish strongly preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and arrange music.

  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn.
  • Demonstrated history of good judgement.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for adaptability and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to skillset to listen empathetically, make peace, and de-escalate.
  • Ability to honor and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to receive, understand, retain, and complete verbal and written tasks.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and work efficiently with staff, clergy, religious, and laity.
  • Ability to work well with people from a diverse variety of audiences.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/ English) is highly desirable but not required.

Travel Requirements:

  • Infrequent travel, by car, may be required to Catholic Center, Diocese Parishes and/or schools.
  • Travel may be required to vendor for supplies
