The Latin American, Caribbean, and European Division (LACE) is offering an opportunity for a qualified individual at the GS-8 level to serve on a full-time, 120-day temporary promotion to the GS-9 level or a qualified individual at the GS-09 level (no promotion) to serve on a 120-day detail as a Reference Librarian to the Hispanic Reading Room. The selectee will work under the direct supervision of the Hispanic Reading Room Head.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Provides reference services for Hispanic Reading Room constituents including patrons, LC staff, researchers, Congress, and the general public by phone, email, and Ask-a-Librarian.
- Provides orientations to walk-in patrons and scheduled researchers about the Hispanic Reading Room, its resources, and its program services during regular shifts in the Hispanic Reading Room and as needed.
- Participates in ongoing collection maintenance in the Hispanic Reading Room.
- Creates or edits content for digital engagement in LibGuides, blogs, and/or StoryMaps as needed.
- Participates in special projects and events as assigned, including displays, Congressional engagements, and LC-wide events.

- Submit a one-page Statement of Interest describing qualifications that include work experience, education, and training related to the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Ability to conduct reference and information functions including providing direct patron services in person and by phone, email, and virtual reference platforms.
- Ability to use reference systems such as LibAnswers and Reference Analytics, softphone applications, online library catalogs, electronic databases, collaboration tools, and standard office applications.
- Ability to provide exceptional customer service to a wide range of library stakeholders.
- Knowledge of countries, languages of the Caribbean, Latin America, and/or the Iberian Peninsula.
The applicant should also provide the name and email address of their immediate supervisor.
Eligibility: This opportunity is open to LC permanent and indefinite staff who have permission from their supervisor.
Work Schedule: Flextime schedule, with telework of up to four days per pay period, with desired onsite schedule of Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
