It is home to the company’s Editorial & Content Strategy, Employee Engagement, Vehicle Brand, Corporate, Tech & Innovation, and International Communications teams. We are looking for a sharp media pro to lead New York media relations, reporting into the Corporate Affairs team and working closely with GM’s product brands, investor relations, executive communications and policy teams.

As Director of Media Relations, you will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with key broadcast, business and consumer media in New York, landing high-impact feature stories, and managing reactive inquiries as you work to protect our reputation. You’ll thrive in fast-paced environments, balancing creative storytelling with the ability to navigate complex and sensitive issues.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to our New York Office weekly.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

Media Relations: Lead GM’s New York media relations and outreach activities, leveraging your strong expertise and relationships. Serve as a GM spokesperson and engage with reporters, acting as a resource and ensuring they understand GM’s perspective. You should know how to advocate for GM and be highly effective in a media context.

Storytelling: You will be out and about meeting with reporters and keeping your ear to the ground in order to understand which reporters are influencing coverage and which storylines are resonating most. Through external and internal conversations, you’ll always be on the hunt for new stories to tell and creative ways to tell them.

Proactive Storytelling: Identify and pitch compelling quick-turn and long-lead stories that highlight GM’s innovation, leadership, and impact. These will be enterprise-level stories, so you’ll need to have a knack for what makes a good story and know how to bring different parts of the business together into a cohesive narrative.

Crisis & Issues Management: Help lead rapid response efforts for sensitive or high-profile media inquiries, ensuring GM’s perspective is well-represented in the news cycle.

Executive Positioning: Work with GM’s leadership to craft and place thought leadership pieces, secure high-profile speaking opportunities and media appearances.

Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with internal teams, including product brands, investor relations, executive communications and policy teams to align media strategies with broader corporate goals.

Your Skills & Abilities

  • 8+ years of experience in communications, preferably within a high-profile corporate setting.
  • Ability to proactively develop and drive a strategic communications plan, while also managing tough news cycles calmly and quickly.
  • Outstanding written and media relations skills. You know that comms is much more than writing media statements. You are creative and are encouraged to come up with new ways to engage on important issues.
  • Excellent people skills and existing relationships with top-tier New York media, especially in business and broadcast outlets. You know how to shape stories and enjoy being out and about, getting to know reporters.
  • Strong storytelling skills and a track record of securing impactful, high-profile media coverage. You’ve also got your eyes on new media trends, watching how companies are using new publishers, platforms and formats to reach target audiences.
  • Excellent judgment — you know how to plan ahead to avoid a crisis and when to escalate issues.
  • Ability to develop relationships and influence executives. You need to have experience navigating a large and complex organization.
  • Ideally you have experience in the automotive industry, manufacturing industry, transportation industry, or an adjacent/highly regulated industry.

We are broad thinkers, team first, and subject matter experts in our field. We have a relentless focus on our mission and our customers. We collaborate across the business, lead with insights, and always ask how we can use communications to add value to the enterprise.
